Responsible for overseeing and managing the Outdoor Recreation Adventure Center and the WKU Challenge Course programs. The Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation/Challenge Course reports directly to the Assistant Director, Programs. This is a 1 year appointment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary of this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.
Oversee daily operations of the Outdoor Recreation Adventure Center (ORAC) and WKU Challenge Course.
Responsible for the management of the Preston Center Pro Shop, the Preston Center Bike Shop, and the WKU Disc Golf Course inclusive of purchasing and inventory of equipment.
Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, retaining, supervising, and evaluating the student staff assigned to the Outdoor Recreation Adventure Center and the WKU Challenge Course. This includes graduate and undergraduate students, interns, and paraprofessionals.
Directly responsible for overseeing the ORAC and Challenge Course Graduate Assistants who are assigned to the Coordinator to assist with the administration of their respective program areas.
Coordinate ORAC and Challenge Course team building programs, including marketing, facilitation, staffing, and evaluation of the programs for the WKU community, and surrounding community.
Schedule and administer a diverse offering of outdoor trips, clinics, and programs for the university community.
Review, revise, and enforce the policies and procedures of the ORAC and Challenge Course Manuals.
Create a fall and spring semester brochure detailing trips, clinics and rental equipment available to the university community.
Develop and maintain a website and social media dedicated to the ORAC and Challenge Course programs.
Conduct periodic inspections of all areas of responsibilities and oversee the maintenance of the ORAC, The Preston Center Bike Shop, WKU Challenge Course, and WKU Disc Golf Course.
Prepare monthly reports detailing ORAC and Challenge Course revenue and expenses, including pro shop transactions.
Maintain a high level of communication between the 3 Department Share Holders of the WKU Challenge Course (Agricultural, Intramural-Recreational Sports, and Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport) while serving as a liaison between the departments.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with the development of the department’s risk management plan inclusive of being a member of the risk management team and serving as an instructor to insure that all student and professional staff are certified in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens.
Organize and manage the departmental student reprimand and rewards program.
Assist with all departmental orientations, in-service programs, and special events.
Serve as a university committee member in assisting with the development of the McChesney Field Campus, Shanty Hollow Property, and the Weldon Pete Park Mountain Bike Trail.
Assist the university and the department with all recruitment, retention, and graduation initiatives planned throughout the school year.
Develop and cultivate collaborative relationships with various University/Bowling Green community departments and organizations.
Collaborate with national organizations, such as NIRSA and AORE, to continue the growth of the ORAC and Challenge Course programs.
Participate in departmental staff meetings perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience Required
Bachelor Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Student Affairs, or related field of study.
Minimum of 1 year management of recreational sports outdoor and/or challenge course programming program. Graduate Assistant experiences accepted.
Minimum of 1 year of student supervision experience. Graduate Assistant experiences accepted.
AED, CPR, & First Aid Instructor Certifications
Wilderness First Responder Certification
