Grand Canyon University is currently seeking a Climbing Wall Coordinator whose responsibilities will include overseeing climbing wall staff, maintaining participant and facility safety, enforcing all climbing wall policies and procedures as well as implementing outside climbing clinics. They will also be primarily responsible for creating the climbing program which should include executing belay certifications, climbing wall orientations, supervision for classes and special interest group rentals held at climbing wall.
Responsible for developing operational infrastructure needed to generate revenue and execute safe wall climbing activities.
Develop climbing wall schedule of activities, including classes, special events, and lead climb times.
Coordinate scheduling of climbing wall staff; including route setting times.
Recruit, train, and develop route setters.
Performs safety orientations with first time wall users and assures that all climbing wall users are classified and capable to climb.
Performs instruction in safe and proper climbing wall use, assists climbers during Supervised Climbing times, and help Facility Staff with daily maintenance and up-keep of the Climbing Wall Area. Instructs courses and clinics in a safe and professional manner.
Ensure route quality (spinning holds, missing tape, broken holds, route variety, etc.) and change routes that have inconsistent moves or that may cause injury.
Provide monthly inspections of the climbing wall and climbing equipment.
Ensure climbing wall area and equipment is in a clean and safe condition.
Enforce all climbing wall policies and procedures.
Teach belay orientations and lessons as well as additional evening programming.
Determine which walls will be stripped and set, and the number and difficulty of routes to be set.
Provide courteous assistance to all participants using the climbing wall.
Responsible for following Outdoor Recreation and University safety procedures and protocols.
Maintain and replace old, broken, worn, equipment.
Collaborate with Club Sports department in establishing a Club Climbing Team.
Work with the Outdoor Recreation Manager and Marketing team to create marketing and advertising to promote the climbing wall facility and its programs.
Creating Wall to Crag Clinics (Inside to Outside)
Responsible for maintaining revenue records and meeting these goals.
Assist with Student Affairs special events as assigned.
Perform other duties as requested.
Possess extensive indoor and outdoor rock climbing knowledge and experience.
Able to climb 5.11/V3 to ensure route quality.
Bachelor’s degree in, Sports Management, Business Management or related field.
3 or more years’ experience in working with climbing walls and/or programming
Route setting experience.
CPR, AED and First Aid current certification or willingness to acquire within three months of employment.
Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends and nights.
Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.
Wilderness First Responder Certified.
Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) Certified.
Current or previous AMGA Top Rope Site Manager certification.
Prefer experience working with students and student leaders.
