Campus Recreation within the division of Student Affairs at the University at Albany seeks applications for an Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness. The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration and oversight of a comprehensive program of fitness activity and wellness programming for the university community. The Assistant Director has autonomy to analyze and resolve problems, and determine appropriate action. The successful candidate will supervise numerous undergraduate and graduate student assistants; provide recommendations for the development of program budgets and oversee implementation and monitoring of budget, inventory and other resources. The Assistant Director also makes recommendations for policy changes.
Group Exercise, Small Group and Fitness & Wellness Program Management
Recruit, select, train, develop, supervise, and evaluate staff in accordance with Department and University guidelines
Provide leadership, direction and oversight for Wellness Initiatives and Programs, Group Exercise, Small Group Training, Fitness Assessments, and Functional Fitness Areas
Conduct monthly staff meetings and provides continual training for Fitness and Wellness employees. Teaches, leads and implements training to develop and educate group fitness instructors, small group training coaches, and student employees.
Supervise and manage the Group Exercise/Small Group Training program, which includes creating and maintaining class schedules, developing program policies and procedures and mentoring instructors
Establish criteria for creating new group ex/small group training programs, workshops, and special events, in keeping with student, faculty, staff and community interests and current trends in order to meet the needs of a diverse University community
Facilitate, and instruct Group Exercise In Training (G.X.I.T) in house certification program
Develop, administer and conduct programs that educate, promote and facilitate wellness for the campus community. Increase awareness of life long wellness, including strategies and activities designed to assist them become and stay fit.
Work with the Coordinator for Marketing and Membership to coordinate marketing for all student staff development and fitness & wellness related programming
Collaborate with other campus groups to enhance the educational and fitness opportunities for members of the University community
Work on the Division of Student Affairs UAlbany WAY (Well-being And You) committee directly responsible for the Movement portion of the plan
Experiential Programs, Leadership, and Staff Development
Provide leadership, direction and oversight for Outdoor Pursuit program including: one-day trips, ropes course workshops, leadership activities, scheduling, budget, and staffing
Create, organize & lead orientation sessions/trainings for all new hires regardless of hiring unit to form common departmental and institutional knowledge and values
Responsible for department-wide training and professional development program for all student employees
Develop and supervise all departmental monthly and yearly awards programs. Maintain an Employee of the Month program as well as yearly senior and area awards
Develop and manage the Group Ex/Small Group Training, Fitness & Wellness & Student Staff Development budgets
Provides leadership and direction in all fitness related equipment purchases, replacement management, equipment inventory, and long term planning. Assists in developing equipment specifications and assists Assistant Director for Facility Operations with equipment maintenance, ordering and replacement
Serve on Division, University and Community committees as assigned
Assist with developing student-learning outcomes, developing division wide initiatives, and assist with Campus Recreation assessment on programming, education and activities to enhance student learning and improve the student experience
Master's degree in Sports Administration, Recreation, Athletic/Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Business Administration and/or related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or internationally recognized accrediting organization
2-3 years of relevant experience in group fitness, mind/body class instruction, and/or personal training
Fitness Instructor certification from ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA, NASM or comparable organization

2-3 years of demonstrated experience in successful management of student staff in a collegiate recreational fitness program
Experience with both Personal Training and Group Fitness
Personal Training certification
Ability to teach and train staff to teach a variety of group fitness classes
Knowledge of nutritional guidelines and principles
Membership and participation in the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA)
