The Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness is responsible for the managerial oversight of the group exercise program, personal training and instructional programs, and massage therapy. This position encompasses a wide variety of administrative and supervisory duties in the area of personnel, risk management, policy and procedures development and enforcement, program management, and statistical data collection and reporting. As part of the departmental professional staff, this position will handle tasks, projects, initiatives, and leadership in a manner that promotes student success and patron engagement. This position reports to the Associate Director for Programs and directly supervises the Group Exercise Coordinator, the Fitness Coordinator, and several part-time massage therapists.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Provide administrative oversight, including the determination of fiscal allocation for each program area
Develop a strategic vision and direction for departmental physical wellness initiatives and programs
Oversee the massage therapy program, including supervision of the part-time massage therapists • Serve as the primary point of contact for the department regarding wellness-related campus initiatives e Establish expectations for each fitness and wellness program area and review outcomes accordingly
Directly supervise the Fitness Coordinator, Group Exercise Coordinator, and massage therapists
Provide senior leadership to the fitness and wellness staff
Create an environment promoting and facilitating student learning and development
Actively participate in the career development of professional and student staff
Regularly review programming and services plans for each fitness and wellness area (group exercise, personal training, and instructional programs, and massage therapy)
Recruit, hire, and develop professional staff for fitness and wellness
Ensure an effective safety/risk management plan is enacted for those participating in fitness and wellness programs
Regularly review program handbooks, policies, and procedures to ensure that program operations are aligned with industry best practices
Program Promotion/Public Relations:
Work with External Relations staff to create and sustain patron interest in both facility memberships and fitness & wellness programs
Ensure program information is provided in an accurate and timely manner to the departmental marketing staff for the creation of promotional materials
Actively participate in the promotion of the fitness and wellness program by ensuring collaborative staffing (with External Relations) for outreach events
Develop and manage annual budgets
Prepare, analyze, and maintain accurate participation statistics and assist with program evaluations in areas of responsibility according to department standards
Ensure regular equipment inventories and research on new equipment and other resources following established procurement guidelines
Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service education sessions, and other divisional or departmental meetings
Participate in other Division of Student Affairs initiatives, programs, and committees as required
Collaborate with other university departments in support of the university's academic mission
Assist in the overall operation of the department by providing input and completing assigned projects, annual goals and objectives, and annual reports
Maintain professional skill sets and certifications as appropriate for job responsibilities and as a professional
Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director for Programs
POSITION: This position is a full-time twelve-month professional faculty position with the rank of instructor.
SALARY: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position includes full VCU Professional Faculty benefits package — health insurance, tuition waiver and 28 days of paid leave.
Master's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, or related field
At least three years of experience working in fitness and wellness
Previous experience supervising graduate assistants, professional staff, and/or student staff
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
National group exercise or personal training certification by ACE, ACSM, AFAA or equivalent Knowledge of current practices and standards in fitness, wellness, and personal training programming Ability to instruct fitness classes requiring significant physical activity
Demonstrated experience in the creation and implementation of wellness programming
Ability to take initiative, problem solve and meet deadlines
Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and organizational skills
Demonstrated administrative skills in: budget development and fiscal statistical management; planning, implementing and evaluating programs; risk management
Demonstrated experience in all aspects of personnel management and staff development; ability to motivate and supervise staff
Experience and skills in operating computers
Ability to lift and handle physical equipment set-ups for various activities
Previous experience working in campus recreation
Both group exercise and personal training certification by ACE, ACSM, AFAA or equivalent
First Aid, CPR/AED Instructor Certification
Experience working in a university/college recreational sports setting
Position involves working some evenings and some weekends
Position is located in a non-smoking work area
