The Department of Recreation & Wellness at UNC Greensboro, which is housed within the Division of Student Affairs, is seeking candidates for two (2) Graduate Assistant positions for the 2019-2020 academic year. Position openings are available in the following areas:
Each Graduate Assistant position is a part-time, 9-month appointment from August 2019 to May 2020; specific dates to be determined upon hire. Each assistantship is renewable for a second year appointment, upon a successful performance review, and may also include summer employment opportunities. Graduate Assistants are expected to work an average of 20 hours per week.
Each Graduate Assistant will receive an in-state tuition scholarship, and a stipend of $10,000 for the 9-month appointment. Graduate Assistants will also receive additional funding for professional development opportunities and/or certifications.

The Graduate Assistant for Fitness oversees the daily operations of the Personal Training program, and supports operations of fitness programming and facilities at the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness. The Graduate Assistant will work directly with the Assistant Director of Fitness to develop a growing Personal Training program with 10-15 trainers, serving 100+ students/faculty/staff. The following responsibilities listed below will be performed with ongoing support and guidance from the Graduate Assistant’s supervisor(s).
Manage the daily operations of a multi-faceted Personal Training program
Assist with daily operations of open recreation fitness areas and Fitness Assistant staff of 30+ student employees
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise student employees in designated areas
Assist with program policy development and implementation
Manage monthly payroll of designated area employees
Co-teach the personal training preparation courses
Coordinate and execute the annual Fall Homecoming 5K
Develop, design and execute one spring fitness event
Collaborate with internal recreation programs on joint initiatives including Wellness programming and events
Collaborate with university departments including but not limited to Kinesiology, Housing and Residence Life, HealthyUNCG, Athletics, and Campus Activities & Programs
Develop semesterly marketing plans in collaboration with internal marketing staff
Assist with designated area budget planning, equipment purchasing and repair
Experience working in a collegiate recreation setting
Current nationally recognized Personal Training certification(s)
Current nationally recognized Group Exercise certification(s)
Prior supervisory or leadership experience in a collegiate recreation department
The Aquatics Graduate Assistant oversees the daily operations of the Aquatics program area, which includes both indoor and outdoor facilities. The Graduate Assistant will work directly with the Aquatics Coordinator to support informal recreation, special events, group reservations, safety courses, and swim lessons. The following responsibilities listed below will be performed with ongoing support and guidance from the Graduate Assistant’s supervisor(s).
Assist with operations of the Natatorium spaces, including a 25-yard by 25-meter lap pool; an activity pool with a zero-depth entry, vortex, and shallow wading area; wet classroom, sundeck, and sauna; and the waterfront space at the outdoor satellite property, Piney Lake
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate 35 student employees, including Lifeguards, Head Guards, and Swim Instructors
Coordinate and plan staff meetings, trainings, and in-services
Assist with risk management planning, and implementation of policies and procedures for the pool and across the facility
Implement and evaluate emergency response drills and skills clinics for employees
Aid in coordination and execution of the Swim Lesson program and special events
Maintain inventory of first aid supplies and safety equipment needs for the Department
Assist with equipment purchase, inventory, budget, maintenance, and marketing
Work on a variety of special projects, including development of operation manuals, and staff appreciation and recognition initiatives
Serve as a lifeguard on duty as necessary
Serve on the Recreation & Wellness Risk Management Committee, and assist with instruction of American Red Cross CPR courses (certification available upon hire)
Current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain)
Experience working in a collegiate recreation setting with aquatics knowledge
