The Coordinator of Student Engagement coordinates all aspects of outdoor recreation, education and leadership for the University of New England’s Biddeford Campus. As a key member of the Student Engagement team they advise and support students while creating a vibrant, dynamic and educational out of class experience. The Coordinator provides oversight to a vibrant Outdoor Recreation Council of committed clubs and organizations. The Coordinator will develop and facilitate departmental programs, implement processes and procedures, and provide a wide variety of trainings for outdoor recreation, student leadership, and Orientation. The Coordinator supervises the Outdoor Recreation student staff and Pre-Orientation Trip Leaders and is responsible for planning and executing a robust pre-Orientation trip program that assists in transitioning new students to the University. This is a 12 month, live-on position.
• Plan, implement and assess all Student Affairs Outdoor Recreation programs for the Biddeford campus, including but not limited to a robust Waterfront program, Pre-Orientation Trailblazer Trips, and a wide variety of outdoor recreation programs and events that will engage a significant number of students. • Train, advise, and support an active group of student clubs and organizations that form the Outdoor Rec Council and address a variety of student interests including: hiking, climbing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, surfing, scuba, snowboarding, skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, crew, fishing, and cycling. • Hire, train, and provide direct supervision to Outdoor Recreation student staff and Pre-Orientation Trip Leaders and assist in the supervision, and training of Orientation Leaders. • Direct the purchase, maintenance, repair, and inventory of outdoor recreation equipment. This involves the ability to drive and tow boats and trailers with kayaks and canoes. • Coordination and oversight of the UNE Zagster Bike Rental • Coordination, oversight and instruction of Indoor Bouldering facility • Collaborate in the development and facilitation of student leadership retreats, trainings and programs sponsored by the Division. • Assist the Director of Student Engagement with ongoing departmental planning, assessment and training efforts specific to outdoor recreation. • Confer regularly with immediate supervisor, Student Affairs staff, and other University personnel to plan, coordinate and evaluate programs/activities/policies, exchange information, investigate and resolve problems, refer students, and the like. • Assist in the planning and facilitation of traditional and annual programs including, but not limited to, Welcome Week, Family and Friends Weekend, and Senior Week. • Serve on a variety of campus wide committees, coordinating events and activities including but not limited to Experience UNE Days, Commencement, New Student Orientation and other large University programs. • Work with various departments to ensure events and programs are safe and all state statutes are followed regarding risk management protocol. • Participate in on-call duty rotation with the Student Engagement professional staff and respond per procedure. • Maintain active engagement in professional associations, pursue professional development opportunities, and remain informed about promising practices and industry standards. • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 1-3 years of relevant professional experience with outdoor education, outdoor recreation, student activities and involvement, and/or leadership development or combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are required. • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with students as a mentor, supervisor, and advisor. • Ability to effectively communicate and partner with other department and division staff, University staff, faculty, parents, and community members to better the college experience for students. • Experience in coordinating logistics, managing risk and assessing best practices. • Small marine engine and 12v electrical engine maintenance experience • Demonstrated administrative, student supervisory, and advisement skills. • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management and safety procedures related to outdoor education and recreation. • Ability to demonstrate evidence of initiative and leadership. • Ability to work evenings and weekends • Valid state issued driver’s license • Maine Guide Certification; sea kayaking and recreation qualifications • CPR/First Aid certified • Certified in Wilderness First Aid
Preferred Qualifications: • Master’s Degree in Student Personal, Higher Education Administration, Outdoor Education, Outdoor Recreation, Recreation Management or Related Field Required • Certified Wilderness First Responder • Certified Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician • Leave No Trace Master Educator • AMGA Single Pitch and or climbing wall certification
