The Intramural - Recreational Sports Department at the University of Virginia is seeking qualified applicants for the Senior Director of Fitness and Instruction, a twelve-month, full-time University Staff position. Master's degree preferred in: physical education, kinesiology, campus recreation, sports management, or a related field. Instructional certification(s) and experience preferred. In addition to comprehensive program planning and supervision, the Senior Director will supervise one, full-time Director of Personal Training and Employee Wellness and will have accountability for hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating all fitness and instructional program assistants and instructional staff. Fitness, instructional, safety, aquatic, first aid, C.P.R. certification(s) and activity supervision experience preferred. Prefer candidates with a minimum of professional experience in campus fitness programming supervision and/or teaching activity instructional courses to youth and/or adults including experience with general sports program administration.
Additional responsibilities include: program planning/assessment, publicity & promotion, participants' registration, equipment purchasing, budgeting, risk management, and program development. Currently the Fitness & Instruction components include extensive offerings in: group exercise, personal training, 'Hoos Well employee wellness, mobile massage, aquatics, racquet sports, and mind & body courses. Future program expansion should additionally explore feasibility of increasing offerings in dance, C.P.R./First Aid certifications and re-establishing a robust weekend youth sports introduction/skills acquisition program.
Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Good human relations skills needed with particular emphasis on the ability to relate well to university students, youth and parents. Computer skills required.
Position is open until filled and available immediately. Candidate reviews will begin February 25, 2019. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
