Under the Division of Student Services, this position will report to the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation. Primary responsibilities will be supporting fitness and wellness services, supporting education and promotion for the department of Campus Recreation and the University community.
Assist in student staff supervision of approximately 35 student staff including hiring, orientation, ongoing trainings, evaluation and supervision for operations of fitness and wellness programs and services, including supervision of internship and fieldwork students
Student development and advising (25%)
Assist with advising, professionalism and intervention
Support continuing education opportunities such as student staff in-services, workshops, local professional site visits, conference opportunities, review of articles and research
Primary advisor to the University Recreation Council.
Conduct knowledge and skill-based assessments of staff pre and post training and development opportunities.
Programming and assessment (20%)
Oversee Training services which includes Personal Training, UFit and Small Group Trainings, including a mentorship program
Support efforts for adaptive and inclusive recreation
Support fitness promotion efforts related to on-campus outreach, special events, various methods of marketing, and presentations
Support efforts on data collection for semester reporting, review results and assist with future planning
Assist with research and assessment centered around health topics such as equity, social justice and ethics
Assist in daily operations of Fitness and Wellness programs and services
Creating learning opportunities support best practices and support quality for all services
Teach a variety of group exercise classes and conduct personal training as needed
Assist with special events and marketing such as Exercise Is Medicineó, Wellness Summit, outreach efforts such as RA trainings, presentations, website management, and social media
Serve on committees and work with departments and organizations. Develop and foster relationships with departments, student organizations, and off campus partners
Personal and professional growth (10%)
Participate in special projects or research and assessment
Actively participate on department and campus initiatives through meetings and committee involvement
Review and share literature, research and articles that support health, recreation and wellness
This is for a one academic year appointment with potential of a second year based on approval and performance, professional development funding available and an option for summer employment. 1
Undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Education, or related field
Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following, personal training, group exercise or similar fitness & wellness related initiatives.
At least 1 year of supervising experience.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Certified or willingness to complete certification prior to start date with one or more of the following: ACSM, NSCA, ACE, NASM or as a Group Exercise Instructor.
Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.
Excellent personal skills, and written and verbal communication skills.
Acceptance into GVSU College of Education, College of Health Professions, or similar area of study.
