The Coordinator of Adventure Recreation is responsible for the oversight of adventure recreation facilities, programs and staff. This individual will be responsible executing an annual trip program, managing the adventure recreation center’s operations and rentals, and climbing wall.
Recruit, schedule, select and train adventure recreation desk staff, climbing wall staff, and trip leaders.
Responsible for all facets of the adventure trip programs. Implement, schedule, organize, train and staff all the trips.
Responsible for the adventure recreation rental center.
Responsible for climbing wall programming and special events.
Ensure the needs and questions of the public are understood and responded to. Maintain good public relations at all time.
Inspect facility for hazards or faulty equipment and ensure repairs are promptly and properly made.
Evaluate performance and program effectiveness of adventure rec programming areas.
Assist in facility management, policy development and risk management for the adventure recreation trips and rental center.
Develop and maintain inventory of all outdoor rental equipment.
Responsible for the operating, preparation, forecasting and monitoring of income and expense budgets as it relates to program area.
Manage budget, strategic planning, and assessment as it pertains to the program area.
Prepare regular written communication such as monthly and annual reports, financial and participation reports and equipment inventory reports.
Collaborate with other campus departments to develop the adventure recreation program.
Implement a comprehensive risk management plan that pertains to the areas that are under their umbrella of responsibility.
Ensure staff compliance with required certifications.
Employ appropriate climbing safety and emergency techniques and train staff through in-service work sessions.
Site Specific Responsibilities:
Develop and offer climbing clinics and trainings. Manage route setting and ensure route quality.
Conduct inspections of routes, wall, and equipment.
Work with marketing to promote adventure recreation programs and services.
Occasionally lead adventure trips. Required to lead all water-based trips.
Assist with department and university wide events. Collaborate with colleagues on youth camp activities.
Develop adventure recreation center as an outdoor resource space and bike service shop.
Bachelor’s degree required in Outdoor Recreation or related field of study; Master’s preferred.
At least 2 years of progressive experience. (Graduate Assistant years accepted)
Experience working in a collegiate/community recreation environment, strong communication and presentation skills.
Demonstrated experience with at least one of the following: outdoor recreation trips, rental centers, or climbing wall management.
Valid Driver’s license and a clean driving record
Demonstrated technical skills and/or instruction in rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, or other outdoor recreation activity areas.
Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
Fiscal accountability; demonstrated experience purchasing outdoor and camp equipment.
Knowledge of standard practices and demonstrated experience in recreational sports.
Leadership and supervisory abilities.
Ability to work as part of and lead a team that collaborates effectively with colleagues.
Entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm.
Analytical skills to: identify problems, assess alternatives, and render consistent, logical decisions.
Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyle choices.
American Canoe Association Certification
Wilderness First Responder Certification with AED/CPR
Leave No Trace Master Educator
Climbing wall instructor certification
Some knowledge of HR theories and best practices in recruitment and staff development.
Basic accounting knowledge; capability of understanding budgets.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CSI Software.
Human Relations: Internal contacts include staff at all levels. External contacts include external customers and vendors. Contact involves troubleshooting, informing, exchanging information, negotiating, making recommendations, and giving information or instructions.
