The Assistant Director of Events and Well-Being provides strategic efforts through a comprehensive and holistic effort to create a healthier and safe Virginia Tech community. Under the leadership and direction of the Associate Director, the Assistant Director will assist with ongoing visioning, development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach, partnerships, and well-being efforts in Recreational Sports at Virginia Tech.
The Assistant Director will focus on events and outreach by developing, implementing, and evaluating a plan to take the Recreational Sports mission beyond the doors of our facilities through events and partnerships and also to draw in new users to our facilities and programs. Key elements for this role include planning events on a large and small scale; working collaboratively with the marketing team on events and promotions; seeking partnerships across Student Affairs and the university for events that will benefit the well-being of students; representing Recreational Sports on committees and at outreach events; promoting health and well-being for the campus community; supporting all areas of Recreational Sports.
The Assistant Director will focus on well-being through programming and partnerships on topics such as mental health, body positivity, eating disorders, stress management, strengths-based development, gender-based violence, student success, and exercise. Key elements of this position involve using motivational interview techniques to conduct health and wellness coaching; facilitating small and large group workshops, presentations, and discussions on a variety of well-being topics; representing recreation through the lens of well-being.
As a part of the administrative services team with Recreational Sports, the Assistant Director will play a key role in assessment activities. This includes conducting and analyzing assessment projects for quality assurance, satisfaction, student learning and administrative outcomes, usage and tracking data, benchmarking.
Master’s degree in public health, health education, health promotion, higher education, recreation or sports management, or related field. Three to five years of work experience. Experience in event planning and outreach; demonstrated ability to plan an event from start to finish. Experience in well-being programming; demonstrated experience with facilitating workshops, presentations, or group discussions; knowledge of and experience utilizing student development and/or behavior theories, demonstrated experience with motivational interviewing strategies; knowledge of emerging and current health issues; ability to create and maintain a welcoming and confidential environment.
Certified Health Coach (ACE, ACSM, etc.), CHES certified, Personal Trainer and/or Group Fitness Instructor certifications (ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NASM, etc.); familiarity with effective marketing strategies specifically using social media; SafeZone trained or ability to attend a training within a year of employment; CPR/AED certified or ability to become certified within 6 months of employment.

The Department of Recreational Sports operates within the Division of Student Affairs. The Department maintains two recreation/wellness facilities: McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall. McComas Hall offers three basketball/volleyball courts, an eight-lane indoor swimming pool, a weight training and cardiovascular workout area, two fitness studios, spin studio, fitness assessment center, TRX and core area, locker and shower facilities, equipment check out, an elevated jogging track, and a lounge area. The facility is also home to the Student Health and Counseling Centers. War Memorial Hall offers an indoor swimming pool and diving well, 6 basketball courts, 13 racquetball courts, 2 wallyball courts, a gymnastics room, locker and shower facilities, a handball court, a weight room, volleyball courts, a squash court, saunas, a dance/fitness room, and a multi-purpose room. The Department provides programs and services in open recreation, fitness, aquatics, instructional programs, intramural sports, sport clubs, outdoor recreation and special events.
