Adams State Adventure Program (ASAP) and Alamosa Parks and Recreation are looking to hire a qualified intern with outdoor leadership & recreation Experience. We desire applicants who are passionate about adventure based programming, self-motivated, technically proficient, and desire mentoring in program administration. ASAP is part of the Student Life and Recreation Department at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. ASAP is one of the oldest outdoor programs in the nation dating back to 1925. The Outdoor Recreation program with the City of Alamosa Parks and Recreation is in it's first year of operation and is looking to grow and expand their offerings.
This is a great opportunity for someone interested in exploring different career options within the field of outdoor recreation. The intern will split their time between the two programs. This position will gain valuable field time and administrative experience with both programs. ASAP and the Parks and Rec department work very closely together on many projects, and this internship will help to further that collaboration. The position will pay $8000 over 9 months with free housing. August 5th start date (flexible).
Adams State Adventure Program Internship
The following items describe the expected product of the intern’s work. The intern has a wide variety of outputs that are an essential part of his/her duties which impact the operation of Adventure Programs and Student Life. The intern’s performance will be assessed against the following outputs.
Ensure overall efficient and effective administration of Adventure Programs with the following outputs:
Staff scheduling is current, correct, and complete. Shifts are maintained through when-to-work.
Provide pertinent information to the ‘assistant Director for budget planning in the following areas: Equipment acquisition, Staff wages, Revenue generation, Trip expenses, Special programs
Participation and usage records are accurate and reported monthly
All program marketing is accurate and part of an annual marketing plan
Continues to develop community outreach programs and guiding services
Trip leaders have a high level of mentorship in the field
Rental Shop and Climbing Wall
The Rental Shop and Climbing Wall Manager understand and are supported in their work
Schedules are created and maintained
Staff understand and are supported in their work in the rental shop
Equipment inventory is in good condition and maintained with regard to an Equipment Acquisition Plan
All Personal Protective Equipment is inspected and logged according to manufacturer’s recommendation and industry standards. Work with CW/CC manager to create this.
Create and adhere to a comprehensive marketing plan
Work with Trip manager to create Fall/ spring marketing material
The Trip Manager is supported in their work
Staff understand and are supported in their execution of trips and special programs
Programming debriefs are executed with consistency and serve to support staff development
Course Area Guides are accurate, current, and accessible
Programs are booked and executed in a timely, efficient manner
Work with community partners for local programming
Other organizational development responsibilities
Update and record gear inventory.
Meet with Assistant Director once a week to coordinate schedules and check in on work
Ensures high level of customer service in daily operations of Adventure Programs and Student Life and Recreation
Schedules and coordinates Challenge Course and Special programs
Coordinates with the Assistant Director to ensure the presentation of a unified front to staff
Maintains professional certifications as appropriate for job responsibilities and as a professional
Represents Student Life and the Adventure Program with a high level of professionalism
Provides support for Student Life and Recreation activities, facilities, and programs as requested
Perform delegated duties as assigned by the assistant director
Alamosa Parks and Recreation Internship Description
General Statement of Duties:
The Outdoor Recreation Internship is a joint position with the City of Alamosa Parks and Recreation and the Adams State University Adventure Program. Together this is a full time position. Roughly 25% of the time will be spent with Alamosa Parks and Recreation and 75% of the time with the Adams State Adventure Program. The following job description relates to duties specific to Alamosa Parks and Recreation:
The Outdoor Recreation Intern shall provide qualified instruction in various outdoor recreation activities to children of all ages, adults, and senior citizens. Will provide support to the Outdoor Recreation Specialist in planning and implementing outdoor recreation programming such as Weekends on the Rio, The Rio Frio 5k Run, the Alamosa Adventure Club and various outdoor programs. The Outdoor Recreation Intern will also assist Parks and Recreation and the Outdoor Recreation Specialist in the maintenance and development of the trail systems in Alamosa.

Assist the Outdoor Recreation Specialist with the planning and implementation of the middle school and high school Alamosa Adventure Club at Alamosa High School and Ortega Middle School.
Assists the Outdoor Recreation Specialist with Weekends on the Rio, including; marketing, program delivery, developing new activities, data collection etc.
Complete maintenance and installation of the trails system in the City of Alamosa. Work with Southwest Conservation Corps crews in corridor clearing, installing signage, designing new trails etc.
Work with Outdoor Recreation Specialist to develop and implement Outdoor Recreation programming for general public. Programming may include but is not limited to; climbing, hiking, camping, birding, paddle boarding, kayaking, biking, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing.
Complete administrative tasks and grant writing in support of the Outdoor Recreation Specialist.
Assist Outdoor Recreation Specialist with Alamosa Ice Fest responsibilities; including the Rio Frio 5k on Ice and the Rio Frio Fat Bike Race.
Work with Adams State Outdoor Adventure Program to maintain bicycle pump track at Cole Park. Improve features, compact soil, create new features etc.
Work as liaison between City of Alamosa Parks and Recreation and the Adams State Adventure Program
Other various tasks as determined by the Outdoor Rec Specialist
Interact effectively with the public, employees, and students.
Function in a high energy environment and provide quality customer service to clients ofall Recreation Division programs.
Work directly with children and adults.
Enforce all rules and regulations.
Handle emergency situations.
Facilitate and control groups and problem situations.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Have or be able to obtain a valid Colorado drivers license.
Work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs, including working evenings and weekends and shifting assignments as program needs change.
Required Physical Capabilities:
Work performed both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to natural weather conditions when working outdoors.
Duties will be performed on sand, asphalt, concrete, grass, wood floors and tile, all of which may be wet or dry.
Frequent walking, standing, and sitting while directing and planning activities. Occasional running and jumping related to athletic activities. Occasional lifting (up to 50 lbs.) in moving and setting up equipment. Occasional bending, twisting, turning, and squatting in implementing, setting up, and leading assigned activities and/or programs. Normal range of vision and hearing for monitoring of program participants' safety.
Work hazards are those normally encountered in the instruction or participation in sports activities.

Prior experience with an adventure based program and the leadership of any of the trips & programs mentioned above is required. Candidates pursuing a career in recreation, outdoor pursuits or student affairs are highly encouraged to apply. Candidates must be outgoing, friendly, and enjoy working with college students. Knowledge of outdoor equipment and repair is a must. Current WFR & CPR preferred.
