This position will work collaboratively with another Assistant Director of Operations to manage overall operations of the Cordova Recreational Sports Center (CREC) a 434,550 square foot, five-floor facility as well as the Turf Recreation Exercise Center (TREC) a 27,000 square foot synthetic turf facility. The combined visit rate for these facilities is 6,000 users a day and 1.5 million visits a year. In addition, this position will manage a shared $260k student wage budget and provide direct supervision for 60 part-time student staff including 45 CREC Operations Specialists and 15 TREC Entry Staff. They will be responsible for developing learning outcomes and assessing the growth of their student staff. They will work closely with other Assistant Directors to maintain consistency in policies and procedures related to operations. They will be involved with general facility needs including both preventative and reactive maintenance.
Provide oversight and leadership to approximately 60 part-time student staff including 45 CREC Operations Specialists and 15 TREC Entry Staff. Hire, train, supervise, evaluate and create a personal and professional development program for student staff. Ensure appropriate certifications are completed and requisite network and building security privileges are requested. Utilize online scheduling software to manage staff availability and schedules. Work with student staff to create thoughtful continuing education content and lead educational topics at bi-weekly and monthly staff meetings and trainings. Develop and implement incentive programs for student employees. Conduct conflict mediation and recommend disciplinary action when necessary.
Develop and maintain operational and personnel budgets for assigned areas in accordance with departmental practices. Maintain appropriate equipment and merchandise inventory in TREC. Utilize software to manage operational components. Work collaboratively with business office to ensure that business functions employ best practices and are consistent with university standards.
Serve as the liaison with indoor/outdoor maintenance, wellness, custodial and parking services. Oversee laundry services for the facility, Intramurals, Physical Therapy, Wellness and towel service. Oversee facility tours.
Assist in the implementation of risk management initiatives, policies, and procedures. Develop communication protocols for facility management, ensuring appropriate communication flow between operations staff.
Develop, assess and report on learning and administrative outcomes for student employees, participants and area operations. Maintain an annual assessment document, tracking facility usage, equipment usage, program support and accomplishments.
Work collaboratively with other departments and University staff. Assist in the performance of non-scheduled work assignments upon notification and serve on assigned department and University committees. Involvement in staff training, special events and facility rentals.
Attend and contribute to department-wide, operational and professional staff meetings.
Continuously pursue professional development opportunities.
Master’s Degree required and one year of experience, preferably in a collegiate recreation setting.
Consideration will be given for additional experience in lieu of master’s degree.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and develop student and part-time staff.
Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents.
Must show the ability to build, develop, and cultivate relationships across campus with a variety of constituents.
Successful candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, service minded and adept at solving problems.
Must show ability to develop long and short-term goals consistent with the mission of the university, the division and the department.
Proficient at computer software (enterprise computing administration, word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.).
Preferred areas of study include higher education, recreation and sports management, kinesiology or related field.
Certification in American Red Cross Instructor or willing to become certified.
Knowledge of risk management issues in collegiate recreation and industry best practices.
