Assists the Director of University Student Union and Student Recreation & Wellness Center
by providing direct oversight of the day-to-day administrative, financial, and supervisory functions of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC). Plans, organizes, and directs a comprehensive recreation and wellness program by performing the following duties personally and through subordinate supervisors. Directs personnel involved in fitness, intramural sports, wellness, aquatics, open recreation and special events departments of the SRWC. The Associate Director of Recreation strives to create an environment that values inclusivity, engages in program assessment, and promotes student development and participation. Acts on behalf of the Director of the University Student Union/Student Recreation & Wellness Center in his/her absence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provides leadership and direction for the planning, development, promotion, delivery, and evaluation of a comprehensive recreation and wellness program including group fitness classes and programs, nutritional information and workshops, personal training, aquatics, intramural sports, outdoor excursions and specialized fitness & wellness programs. Oversees, leads, and directs personnel engaged in fitness, intramural sports, wellness, aquatics, outdoor recreation and rock wall, membership, building management, open recreation and special events services.
Oversees the daily management, facility oversight and operation of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency of subordinates. Provides appropriate guidance and direction in all operational and management areas including, but not limited to: employee training, business practices, participant safety, programmatic efficiency, and operational effectiveness.
As a member of the USU senior management team, meets regularly with other management personnel to establish and ensure effective on-going communication and coordination among departments. Assists USU managers with all aspects of program and service delivery and ensures USU adherence to the mission, goals, and policies of the Associated Students.
Studies and analyzes recreational needs and resources. Conducts market research and develops short- and long-range goals and objectives to meet the changing needs and interests of students and other users. Reviews and evaluates programs and services to ensure that appropriate risk management and ASI procedures are in place or developed.
Prepares, executes and monitors the annual operating budgets of all Student Recreation & Wellness Center programs and operations. Evaluates monthly financial statements and prepares profit/loss projections for all operations. Responsible for revenue generation through sales of memberships including faculty, staff, alumni and affiliates. Reconciles monthly profit and loss statements and keeps Director informed.
Responsible for developing and directing a comprehensive building supervision plan that addresses the daily operational needs of the facility including the opening and closing of the building, safety and security of visitor. Maintains all safety and security requirements and expectations. Works with the Building Coordinator to develop, plan and oversee the administrative and operational needs of all recreational, fitness, wellness, and intramural activities.
Purchases equipment and services from outside vendors. Establishes and maintains contact with service and equipment vendors. Responsible for strategic planning of a preventive maintenance plan for equipment.
Responsible for effective Safety/Risk Management plans for the emergency care of staff and participants of the SRWC. Ensures all recreation operations and programs are conducted with safety of staff and participants.
Develops and maintains relations with other recreation providers on campus. Works collaboratively with ASI staff, student leadership to develop and/or participate in campus-wide programs.
Coordinates with the Associate Director, Facility Operations, the Facility Services Supervisor, and the Maintenance Supervisor for the daily operation, cleaning, and maintenance of the SRWC facility, including equipment repairs and maintenance.
Directs the formulation, development, and documentation of operating policies and procedures for the Student Recreation & Wellness Center, consistent with ASI and university regulations. Studies and complies with all applicable government regulations.
Serves on campus wide boards and committees as needed as related to health and wellness for ASI.
Manages seven full-time and 200+ part-time employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree required or equivalent from a college or university in recreation, physical education/kinesiology, sports management, business administration or a related field; Master’s preferred; minimum of five years related experience in recreation, college union or student services administration; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
Possess a valid California driver’s license. American Red Cross Adult CPR and AED certification mandated. Selected candidate will be required to obtain these certifications within the first thirty days of employment.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed to oversee programmed events as necessary. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, demonstrates initiative, possesses superior interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, and is willing to work flexible hours, including potential weekends and evenings.
Experience with progressive management and supervisory experience in recreation management and/or facility management. Experience in a university setting preferred.
