Under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director - University Recreation, the Associate Director of Campus Recreation - Facilities and Risk Management is responsible for assisting with the development and administration of a comprehensive university recreation program serving the needs of our global community. This position is directly responsible for the oversight of the staff responsible for the Intramural Sports Program, Marketing, Customer Service, Student Development, Common Training, as well as directly responsible for all facility operations, custodial, maintenance and risk management standards and protocols. This individual will supervise full and part-time staff within all areas of oversight. Serves as the primary liaison for the Facilities Department for work-orders and secondary for Facility projects. As a member of the University Recreation leadership team, the Associate Director of Campus Recreation - Facilities and Risk Management is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of the vision for Globalizing Campus Recreation.
Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, sports administration, general studies or related field.
Minimum of 5 years of progressive and successful experience as a full-time campus recreation professional or within a closely related field.
Ability to spend most days in office setting using a computer and conducting or attending meetings.
Ability to set priorities in order to perform a high volume of detailed work with regular interruptions and manage a variety of situations in a fast-paced environment when working across an organization’s many functional areas
Required to work on occasional weekends covering events throughout a calendar year and some evenings and early mornings. Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations (designees are also available) and inclement weather facilities management.
Proficient with Microsoft Office programs and the ability to adapt to learning in-house systems of management/logistics/ and integrated daily operations of recreation facilities (sole use and shared facilities).
Demonstrated strength in ability with the following: communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills necessary to successfully manage issues with agencies, vendors, consultants, as well as when resolving conflicts related to direct reports/others. Leadership, oral and written communication skills, as well as supervisory and training skills when working with student employees, leaders, professional employees. Interpersonal skills and customer service skills. Detail oriented and highly organized. Communicate with clarity, tact and diplomacy with a variety of people on the phone and in meetings, and when dealing with the public/external constituents. Work independently or within a team focused environment, meeting deadlines and handling/taking ownership of multiple projects simultaneously without negative impact on demeanor/attitude. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers. Influence others in a positive direction toward resolving conflicts. Passion for planning, implementing and evaluating recreational programs and activities.
Knowledge of the following, supported by skills and abilities: • Current trends in campus recreation related to “student led” departments, grounded in student development theory; • Relevant equipment, policies, procedures, programs and strategies/best practices associated with administering a comprehensive program of recreational activities in a university setting; • Meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction through needs assessment; • Equipment/supplies purchasing; • Computers and related software; • Ability and interest in serving as a mentor for students and new professionals; • Principles and methods for training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups and the measurement of training effectiveness; • Principles and processes for performance management grounded in accountability; • Possess strong integrity; • Ability to maintain accurate records and files; • Strong follow through and multi-tasking abilities; • Ability to make sound independent judgments and possess proven critical thinking skills, and ability to work appropriately with high level constituents, vice presidents and dignitaries.
Master’s degree in recreation management, sports administration, higher education administration or related field.
Experience with the following: • Marketing for university recreation programming and executing marketing through social media platforms, forums and personalized networks. • Enterprise technology designed for Globalizing Recreation through a networked university that is undefined by place. • Administering traditional Intramural Sports and Recreational Gaming/Esports • Budget management • Oversight of recreation facilities directly • Supervision of full-time employees • EMS software • Risk Management procedures, as well as establishing and implementing protocols • Designing and implementing comprehensive departmental common trainings • Pedagogy of student development theory. • Experience developing student led management models, grounded in student development theory.
Facilitator/training experience, public speaking/presentation skills.
CPR/AED Instructor Trainer.
Aquatic Facility Operator Certification (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO).
