The Assistant Director, Recreational Sports, under general direction, assists in the administration and operation of the assigned unit within the Department of Recreational Sports, including customer service, purchase and maintenance of equipment, risk management, personnel matters, and budget. Supervises subordinate staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assists with the administration and operation of assigned programs.
Assists with the management of special events, including scheduling and training special event staff, and coordinating all facility reservations for events.
Assists supervising assigned personnel
Assists in developing, implementing, and monitoring a comprehensive risk management plan
Assists the Director in oversight of contract compliance for the department
Assists with evaluation and monitoring all equipment purchasing, inventory, and maintenance
Assists the director in supervising all aspects of assigned program(s)
Assists in the development of short and long-range goals for the department’s programs and/or operations
Assists and recommends developing procedures for documenting and cataloging departmental business processes, as appropriate
Assists in developing, implementing, and monitoring budgets and making budgetary recommendations for programs.
Assist with intramural, summer camp and facility operations programs including monitoring the budgets and making recommendations for budgetary decisions.
Assist with the management of classes and related activities.
Assist in recruiting, hiring, training and evaluating assigned personnel.
Supervises full and part-time personnel

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Education - Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Kinesiology, Sports Administration/Management, Business Administration/Management, or related field
Experience - Six years of experience in recreational sports programming, including at least two years of supervisory experience.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered
Preferred Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Recreation, Kinesiology, Sports Administration/Management, Business Administration/Management, or related field.
Experience working with students in a collegiate setting.
Experience in establishing, leading and evaluating employee training and leadership workshops with an emphasis on student development.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Strong computer knowledge.
Must possess effective leadership, time management, and customer service skills
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to interact effectively and professionally with the general public and the students served.
Ability to plan, organize, assess, and perform tasks accurately and independently.
Ability to make effective presentations to students, Rec Sports members and TAMIU community.
Ability to provide excellent customer service and practical problem solving assistance to internal and external customers.
Ability to interpret a variety of documents such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to multi-task and work both independently and in teams.
Registration, Certification, or License
Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification through the American Heart Association, required within one year for continued employment.
Employee will be responsible for maintaining current certification(s)/licensure(s) required as a condition of employment and providing valid and legitimate proof of certification(s)/licensure(s) to the supervisor prior to the expiration date(s) of certification(s)/licensure(s).
Ability to exert heavy force and lift moderate to heavy objects.

Supervision of Others:
This position generally supervises employees.
Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
