The mission of UW Recreation is to provide safe, accessible, and dynamic recreation experiences to engage students in growth and wellbeing.
The Marketing & Communications Manager will execute this mission by developing and implementing comprehensive and strategic marketing, communications, and outreach plans in an effort to broaden awareness and promote UW Recreation offerings and the benefits of leading an active and healthy lifestyle, with students as the primary focus.
Promising candidates will possess a passion for recreation, have a creative approach to their work, show an ability to be a leading as well as a contributing member of a team, manage projects and people with the highest level of integrity, display an extreme attention to detail, and have a proven track record of developing and executing a vision.
This position reports to the Associate Director and serves as a member of Recreation’s Extended Executive Team. It leads the department on all initiatives related to marketing, communications, and outreach.
Incumbent must view self as part of not only UW Recreation, but also Student Life, UW campus(es), Seattle and PNW region, and the national stage of campus recreation – and promote department accordingly!
Marketing, Communications, and Outreach
Develop and implement the department’s marketing and communications strategic plans for both an internal and external audience.
Produce and maintain graphic designs for promotional materials and content for written copy to be used on various platforms such as web, print, digital displays, and mobile.
Oversee the department’s website, apps, business pages, and social media efforts, both current and emerging.
Serve as the departmental contact and work in conjunction with the Member Services Manager and other staff to promote Rec offerings and activities at on- and off-campus outreach events (e.g., tabling at fairs, vetting sponsorship opportunities, leading the Annual Recreation Movement, etc.).
Develop and implement department wide branding strategies.
Hire, train, and supervise the Creative Team of part-time student employees to provide support in carrying out all marking, communications, and outreach responsibilities. The Creative Team currently consists of a photographer/videographer, two graphic designers, a marketing assistant, and a digital communications assistant (eventual composition of the Creative Team will complement the skills of the incumbent).
Promote Recreation employment opportunities to engage as wide of an audience as possible.
Represent Rec across campus by participating in and contributing to relevant committees and marketing/communications learning communities (e.g., Student Life Social Media, UMAC, etc.), and collaborating with Student Life colleagues on projects.
Assist with department-wide student employee development efforts.
Be a contributing member of the Husky Experience and Student Employee Engagement Committees.
Work closely with the IT Manager to carry out responsibilities, including supporting Creative Team efforts.
Assist with Recreation meetings (Leadership Team, Quarterly meetings, ad hoc, etc.).
Assist the Associate Director with the department’s assessment efforts by compiling and producing the department’s Annual Report.
Manage the Marketing & Communications budget and maintain internal control of all expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance. Prepare an annual budget by projecting expenditures in staffing, software, services, and equipment.
Three years’ experience as a marketing/communications/outreach professional in the fields of Higher Education, Recreation, Non-profit Management, and/or Advancement.
Technical skills in graphic & web design (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Microsoft Office programs, etc.).
Possess interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and colleagues.
Demonstrated ability in leading people and projects.
Demonstrated skill in supervising part-time staff and student employees.
Demonstrated ability to write reports, analyses, and evaluations clearly and effectively.
Demonstrated ability to prepare, manage, and control annual operations budgets and expenditures.
