The Events Coordinator provides strategic leadership in departmental events and engagement. The Coordinator will provide ongoing visioning, development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach and departmental events within Recreational Sports at Virginia Tech. Reporting to the Associate Director for Administrative Services, the Coordinator will serve as part of the administrative team.
The Coordinator will focus on events and outreach by developing, implementing, and evaluating a plan to take the Recreational Sports mission beyond the doors of our facilities through events and partnerships. The Coordinator will also work in conjunction with the Marketing Manager to draw in new users to facilities and programs. Key elements for this role include: -planning events on a large and small scale -working collaboratively with the marketing team on events and promotions -seeking partnerships across Student Affairs and the university for events that will benefit the well-being of students -finding innovative ways to reach non-users -outreach and events for our underrepresented and marginalized student population -representing Recreational Sports on committees and at outreach events -promoting health and well-being for the campus community -supporting all areas of Recreational Sports.
As a part of the administrative services team within Recreational Sports, the Coordinator will play a key role in assessment activities. This includes conducting and analyzing assessment projects for quality assurance, satisfaction, student learning and administrative outcomes, usage and tracking data, benchmarking.
Bachelor’s degree in event planning, marketing/communication, hospitality and tourism management, recreation management, or related field and/or equivalent related experience. Event planning experience. Demonstrated excellent experience in event planning and outreach. Experience with facilitating presentations and group discussions. Project management experience. Collaboration and team-oriented. Creative and innovative. Experience managing a staff and/or volunteers.
Experience in sports/recreation event planning. Experience in higher education. Familiarity with effective marketing strategies specifically using social media. SafeZone trained or ability to attend a training with a year of employment. CPR/AED certified or ability to become certified within six months of employment.

About Virginia Tech
The Department of Recreational Sports operates within the Division of Student Affairs. The Department maintains two recreation/wellness facilities: McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall. McComas Hall offers three basketball/volleyball courts, an eight-lane indoor swimming pool, a weight training and cardiovascular workout area, two fitness studios, spin studio, fitness assessment center, TRX and core area, locker and shower facilities, equipment check out, an elevated jogging track, and a lounge area. The facility is also home to the Student Health and Counseling Centers. War Memorial Hall offers an indoor swimming pool and diving well, 6 basketball courts, 13 racquetball courts, 2 wallyball courts, a gymnastics room, locker and shower facilities, a handball court, a weight room, volleyball courts, a squash court, saunas, a dance/fitness room, and a multi-purpose room. The Department provides programs and services in open recreation, fitness, aquatics, instructional programs, intramural sports, sport clubs, outdoor recreation and special events.
