The Senior Associate Director of Programs will work collaboratively with and report to the Director. Responsibilities include managing the services, functions, and resources of the departmental program areas to include challenge education, climbing, club sports, fitness, intramural sports, nutrition and wellness. Responsible for oversight of departmental assessment, strategic engagement, student development, alumni outreach and development. Work collaboratively with and provide leadership to full-time and graduate staff in each of these areas to develop, program and administer comprehensive programs and services that are in line with the mission and values of the department. Responsible for supervising, evaluating and leading the staff to ensure continuous professional and personal development. Expected to build and cultivate relationships with numerous campus constituents to help advance the mission of the university, the division and the department. Must stay abreast of regional and national trends in all areas of campus recreation and student life. Responsible for leading departmental initiatives and projects to include fiscal management and strategic planning. Serve on the senior leadership team and management team to provide leadership to the department with the execution of numerous executive and administrative duties of considerable scope and complexity requiring excellent knowledge, initiative, judgment and critical thinking. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Administrative Oversight: Oversee and manage all departmental program areas including include challenge education, climbing, club sports, fitness, intramural sports, nutrition and wellness as well as department wide assessment, strategic engagement, student development, alumni outreach and development. Work with staff in these areas to ensure that the department offers programs and services that meet the demands of the university and surrounding community while also promoting our mission and embracing our values. Work with staff to ensure that our programs are diverse, inclusive, educational and safe. Work with staff to develop, prepare and measure strategic goals for the development and growth of program areas, participants and student employees. Establish a culture that embraces innovation and constant improvement through assessment tools and feedback from constituents and stakeholders.
Personnel Management: Responsible for hiring, supervising, evaluating and developing a number of diverse full-time staff who oversee a wide variety of program areas. Provide leadership, expertise and guidance to all professional staff. Responsible for providing personal and professional development opportunities to professional staff. Provide guidance and coaching to professional staff regarding developing and supervising professional, clerical, graduate and undergraduate student staff.
Departmental Leadership and Fiscal Management: Serve on senior leadership team and management team. As a member of senior leadership, responsible for fiscal planning and development on the department level, developing departmental staffing priorities, strategic goals and best practices. As a member of management team, responsible for developing departmental priorities and policies, cultivating a positive and innovative departmental culture, developing departmental goals and holding staff accountable for goal execution. Responsible for oversight of all program area budgets; work with staff in each area to develop, propose and manage budgets as well as educate staff on appropriate budget management techniques and purchasing procedures.
Miscellaneous: Work collaboratively across campus and in the community; cultivating relationships that will help to advance the mission and values of the department, division, and university. Assist the director in the performance of non-scheduled work assignments upon notification and serve on assigned departmental, divisional and university committees as needed.
Six years of administrative and management experience in recreational programming on the collegiate level
Experience hiring, training, managing, and developing professional staff
Valid US or Canadian driver's license
Ability to serve as a strong leader; offering long term vision and strategic planning that will contribute to the development and enhancement of a comprehensive university recreational program that will serve the entire community
Must show ability to work collaboratively with partners across campus and in the community to advance the mission and goals of both the university, the division and the department
Ability to lead department initiatives such as strategic planning, departmental budget management, capital replacement planning and execution, capital project management, program development and continuous quality improvement in all areas
Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage and mentor a multitude of recreation and wellness programs, services and facilities as well as professional staff
Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and mentor a multitude of recreation facilities, services, and professional and service staff
Ability to be an integral part of division fiscal planning and development
Successful candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, service minded, visionary and adept at solving problems
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies
Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills
Proficient at mainstream computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.) and experienced in enterprise software
Preferred areas of study include higher education, recreation and sports management, kinesiology or related field
Knowledge of varied business functions and industry best practices in a collegiate recreation setting
A background check and check of criminal conviction records will be made for employment in this position.
