Towson University Campus Recreation is looking for passionate and qualified applicants for our Coordinator of Intramural Sports position. Towson University is located in Towson, Maryland in the heart of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. We are located just eight miles from downtown Baltimore, which is recognized as one of the three best cities for recent college graduates by the Wall Street Journal. Towson University is the largest university in the Baltimore area. Campus Recreation at Towson University serves a vibrant student body with nearly 23,000 students. Our department employs 25 professional and para-professional staff and more than 300 student employees. In January 2018, a 94,000-square foot addition to the campus recreation center opened, which was recently named as an Outstanding Sports Facility by the National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA). The intramural sports program utilizes multiple gymnasiums, multi-activity courts, and turf fields.
Intramural Sports Program Management
Administer, supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the campus recreation intramural sports program. Create, implement and supervise a variety of organized intramural sports programs featuring leagues, tournaments, and special events, including traditional, non-traditional and adaptive sports. Create and administer official training for a variety of sports. Utilize multiple software programs, such as Fusion, Connect 2, SubitUp and IMLeagues to administer and manage aspects of intramural sports programming such as scheduling, payment reconciliation, form tracking, and participation statistics. Purchase and inventory appropriate equipment and supplies for all intramural sports events. Evaluate, develop and ensure compliance with program and risk management policies. Assist in the annual review, revision, and implementation of intramural sports policies, procedures and sport rule modifications. Manage participant engagement and customer service, including cases of participant dissatisfaction and inappropriate behavior according to Campus Recreation and University policies. Create and foster a culture of civility and inclusion within the intramural sports program. Develop and foster cross campus relationships with Fraternity & Sorority Life, Housing & Residence Life and other key partners. Work with department marketing staff to communicate relevant intramural sports events and information to participants via website, social media, etc.
Recruit, hire, train and directly supervise one graduate assistant, and approximately 15+ officials,10+ supervisors, and 1 student manager. Develop and coordinate supervisor and officials’ meetings/training. Supervise campus recreation facilities and staff on evenings and weekends, as assigned, a minimum of one night per week. Approve student employee timesheets and comply with campus/department student employee and payroll policies. Provide regular performance feedback and opportunities for ongoing professional development.
Assessment/Administrative Related Duties
Work in accordance with Associate Director, Programs & Assessment and Assistant Director, Competitive Sports on overseeing program assessment related to departmental learning outcomes and divisional goals. Provide annual assessment data and reports to support departmental assessment plan. Prepare a programmatic annual report complete with user data, student interviews, and university collaboration efforts. Serve on university and departmental committees, as assigned. Represent the Department at various campus, division, and community functions, as assigned. Assist the Assistant Director - Competitive Sports in evaluation and formulation of policies, procedures, and long-range plans. Periodically assess the needs and interests of the Towson University community in regard to new programs or modifications of existing program structure. Contribute to the accomplishment of Department goals and initiatives, as assigned. Other duties as assigned by Departmental staff.
Work in accordance with Coordinator - Facilities and Events to schedule all intramural sports programming in Burdick Hall and on Burdick Field. Assist the Assistant Director - Competitive Sports in facility related work including: Occasionally working with Athletic Department to secure Athletic Facilities for special events; Modifying facilities (painting the field, laying down tape, setting up equipment and nets) for intramural sports programming; Performing preventative maintenance responsibilities associated with Burdick Field and the Burdick Field house.
Assist the Assistant Director- Competitive Sports with budgetary oversight for all operations including student payroll, operational expenses, and programmatic revenue generation. Manage monthly payroll procedures for all student staff positions including timesheet approval, pay period budget logs, and monthly reporting. Monitor all expenses related to procurement card purchases. Manage all programmatic fee collection and revenue generation for intramural sports programs. Provide monthly and/or annual budget reports on all program area budgets to the departmental Budget Associate. Provide annual budget request and adhere to allocated funds for each fiscal year.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and one year of professional work experience. Candidates with a Master’s degree and a graduate assistantship or other professional experience will also meet the requirement. An offer is contingent on verification of degree and experience by the start date. Demonstrated supervisory experience in managing a diverse intramural sports program to include programming, facility management and staffing preferably in a campus recreation setting. Demonstrated ability to teach and conduct officiating and mechanics trainings and workshops for multiple sports including basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Strong computer skills for the processing of facility, fiscal and personnel management. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.; physical ability to move and utilize sporting equipment, survey facilities and administer routine maintenance when and where necessary; ability to teach officiating skills to student staff. Weekly evening/night work is required, a minimum of once per week.
Preferred: • Master’s degree in sports management, recreation and leisure studies, physical education, or closely related field from an accredited college or university. • CPR, AED and First Aid-Professional Rescuer Instructor certified. • Experience working in a collegiate recreation environment. • Experience with Innosoft Fusion, Connect2, SubitUp and IM Leagues software programs.
