The Coordinator will oversee and train student facilitators to assist with all aspects of the climbing wall, outdoor shop, team building, and programming. Responsible for daily management of the indoor climbing wall, Outdoor Shop, student staff of 15-20, all Team Building requests within the University and Community, and special programming and events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Hire, train, schedule, evaluate and supervise student employees of the climbing wall, outdoor shop, and in programmatic areas of oversight.
Design and implement team-building and interactive group games designed for teaching leadership and well-being.
Work collaboratively with colleagues in Recreational Sports, the Division of Student Engagement and Lamar University to provide quality recreational and developmental experiences for students.
Develop, implement, and re-evaluate all policies and procedures for each program.
Administer assessment, evaluation, and mitigation of risk for all programs, equipment and facilities.
Develop and administer budget including programs, equipment, and payroll.
Coordinate the marketing and promotion in programmatic areas of oversight.
Facility & Equipment Management Responsibilities:
Provide daily management of indoor climbing facility and outdoor shop.
Maintain a positive, safe and inclusive environment in all programs and facilities.
Manage internal and external inspections of the indoor climbing facility.
Manage a wide range of outdoor equipment and maintain equipment inventory and equipment procurement procedures.
Teach and facilitate team-building and interactive group games designed for leadership of Lamar University students, faculty, staff, as well as community and other outside groups.
Responsible for the year-round design, implementation, and leadership of various programs.
Develop and implement special event programming and open enrollment clinics/workshops for the indoor rock climbing facility.
Manage existing partnerships across campus and develop new collaborative programming in and outside the Recreational Sports Department.
Create new innovative recreational programs to enhance student well-being.
Work in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff to ensure the Rec Center provides a wide-range of culturally relevant programs that offer opportunities for engagement and reflection.
Collaborate with internal departments, and student organizations to plan, create, and execute outreach activities that both advertise Lamar Recreational Sports programs and increase student organizations usage of the Sheila Umphrey Recreation Center.
Review current programs and identify additional opportunities to enrich the program purpose.
Serve on departmental and university committees.
Work occasional evenings, weekends, and university breaks based on program offerings and schedule.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in Recreation Management or related field.
Minimum of 1 year of full-time experience in the promotion, design, development, and administration of recreation programs including management of an indoor climbing facility. Two years as a Graduate Assistant in campus recreation can be used as one year.
Ability to lift/move equipment and materials associated with the position, and climb to heights of 43 feet.
Valid driver’s license.
American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification or must obtain within the first 12 months of employment.
Current instructor certifications from one or more of the following: Professional Climbing Instructors’ Association (PCIA), Top Rope Climbing Instructor or American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), Single Pitch Instructor -PCIA or AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor, or must obtain within the first 12 months of employment.
Demonstrated experience managing an indoor climbing facility.
