American University is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable recreation professional to join our Recreational Sports & Fitness team. This individual will manage and develop a comprehensive Group Exercise program for our campus, while taking a role in the daily operations of three fitness centers. Position Summary: This position is responsible for the development, management, and supervision of the Recreational Sports & Fitness Group Exercise and Instructional Programs. This position oversees ~25 student and part-time fitness instructors and ensures the smooth operation of ~45 weekly fitness classes. The Fitness Coordinator must keep up with current trends in the fitness industry and ensure that the classes offered appeal to our campus community. The Fitness Coordinator also acts as evening supervisor one evening / week and manages the day to day operations of the Fitness Center during this time period. This position reports to and works closely with the Assistant Director of Fitness & Wellness.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Physiology, Fitness, Nutrition, Health Education or related field, or the equivalent in education, training and/or experience. At least two years of relevant work experience. Current CPR and AED certification. A nationally recognized and accredited group fitness or personal training certification. Good written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Physiology, Fitness, Nutrition, Health Education or related field preferred. Experience in working in recreation or wellness promotion.
