The Assistant Director of Recreational Services is a team member of the Rowan University Department of Campus Recreation, which reports to the Division of Student Affairs. With approximately 200 student and part-time staff, the department strives to promote health and well-being by providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment as well as promote the four core values of student development, quality, service, and relationships for all individuals of the Rowan community. The Recreation Center is a 92,000 square-foot facility featuring a three-court gymnasium, indoor track, two 25-yard pools, four racquetball courts, a cycling room, a group exercise studio, fitness and free-weight room areas, full locker/shower facilities, and a café area. In Fall 2017 Campus Recreation opened an additional 17,000 square-foot satellite facility (Rowan Fitness Center) with the newest trends in fitness equipment. This individual will be responsible for the direction, planning, organization, supervision, and evaluation of the Fitness Center. The position provides leadership, oversight, and developmental opportunities to fitness area student staff in the Recreation Center and Fitness Center. The staff member will collaborate with the other professional staff and graduate coordinators to provide diverse recreational opportunities and services that promote student learning, development, and lifelong healthy habits.
This position will report to the Assistant Director of Marketing, Member Services & Business Operations, while collaborating with all professional staff in Campus Recreation. This individual will contribute to the departmental mission to encourage all students, faculty/staff, and members to foster a healthy lifestyle and promote Rowan THRIVE.
Staff Supervision Responsibilities
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, evaluate, and administer payroll for approximately 40 diverse student staff comprising of fitness area supervisors, fitness area assistants, and an intern
Ensure that policies & procedures are properly communicated, interpreted, and implemented uniformly
Assist in supervising, advising, and providing feedback to all student staff on shift in the fitness center, including building managers, main office staff, personal trainers, and group fitness instructors
Assist with supervision of custodial/housekeeping operations and report any issues or feedback to the Assistant Director of Facilities
Supervise, coordinate, and manage the day-to-day operations of the 17,000 square foot fitness center
Cultivate and maintain a high level of accessibility to students, members, and approved external partners while responding in an appropriate and timely manner to questions, concerns, requests, and feedback
Coordinate with the Assistant Director of Member Services on student access, membership issues, and new member acquisition
Oversee and assist with the development of fitness center policies and procedures for fitness area, weight room, personal training, small group training, fitness assessments, and instructional programs with a particular emphasis on risk management
Manage and implement protocols for emergency response for evacuations, injuries, and incidents
Maintain records, prepare and analyze statistical reports, evaluations, participant surveys, assessments, and data
Inventory, research, and purchase necessary free weight, cardiovascular, functional and selectorized equipment for the fitness center
Coordinate weekly inspection and maintenance of fitness center facility including fitness equipment and scheduling necessary repairs with Nexus Properties
Assist in planning and promoting Fitness Center facility, programs, special events, and services
Exemplify and role model the departmental core values of Student Development, Relationships, Service, and Quality
Actively participate in the student development program including new employee orientation, the annual employee training program, and ongoing training sessions and in-services
Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service education sessions, and other divisional or departmental meetings, initiatives, and committees
Stay current with best practices, and maintain professional certifications to provide high quality, inclusive, and safe spaces in the fitness center
Collaborate with other academic/student affairs departments and student organizations to promote informal recreation and well-being opportunities in campus recreation spaces

Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University and one year of professional experience
NOTE: Bachelor’s Degree with at least 2 years paraprofessional experience in collegiate recreation can be in lieu of one year of professional experience
Ability to become certified in CPR/First Aid/AED through the American Red Cross within the first 6 months of hire
Communicate effectively and professionally, including written, interpersonal, and public speaking
Skilled in use of personal computers and related software (Microsoft Office & Google Drive)
Occasionally work early morning, evening, weekends and holiday work hours
Experience supervising the daily operations of a fitness or recreation facility
Experience supervising part-time employees
Demonstrated ability to work independently, multi-task, be resourceful, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment
Experience working in a cohesive, team setting
Ability to lift 25 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally
Master’s Degree in Recreation, Exercise Science, Sports Management, Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or related field and two years of professional experience
CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification through the American Red Cross
Membership in NIRSA - Leaders of Collegiate Recreation
Experience in supervising facilities and student staff in collegiate recreation
