The Office of Campus Recreation at the University of South Carolina is excited to offer this position within our newly restructured and integrated Fitness unit. Yearly, this unit anticipates programming for 80+ group exercise classes, 3,250 passes sold, and 60+ student employees acquiring a variety of national certifications. With a Fitness unit this comprehensive we anticipate ample room for growth, development and leadership. We are also in the design stages and will be opening a 200+ acre recreational field complex to help meet the needs of our ever-growing community and will be conducting major renovations to a current recreation facility. The fitness coordinator supervises and develops student employees and creates and administers fitness programs to provide opportunities for students to engage in meaningful beyond the classroom experiences. This position will directly manage group exercise and assist in managing personal training, small group training and educational-based fitness programs.
Primary responsibilities include: • Hire, train, schedule & supervise approximately 60 fitness student employees. Design & facilitate training sessions with an emphasis on risk management, customer service, facility stewardship and group exercise and small group fitness-specific knowledge. Provide leadership training and development to designated students & student groups • Develop, market & manage the group exercise program based on current trends, in order to provide innovative opportunities that meet the needs of participants • Create and administer program budget through the use of appropriate university financial policies and tools to ensure that revenue and expenses are at an optimal level. Communicate requests based on the needs of the program • Create risk management standards for equipment and facilities based on industry best practices
Masters degree in Student Services or related field and 1 year related experience, or bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience.
Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification. In addition, a current certification must be held from either the Aerobic and Fitness Association or America (AFAA), American Council on Exercise (ACE) or the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
This position requires a variable work schedule. Early mornings, evening & weekend hours will be required. In addition, this position has been designated as essential personnel during inclement/hazardous weather and other emergencies.
