The Assistant Director is responsible for the overall management, supervision, and leadership of a comprehensive indoor and outdoor recreation program, through a strong partnership between the Indiana Memorial Union and the School of Public Health. The mission of IU Outdoor Adventures and Bowling & Billiards is to promote purposeful recreation by providing diverse programs, products, and services for Indiana University and the surrounding communities. IUOA fosters personal growth and active lifestyles through experiential education, facilitated reflection, environmental stewardship, and leadership development.
The Assistant Director’s responsibilities include the planning and implementation of recreation opportunities and academic courses, supervision of professional and student staff, responsibility for generating revenue, and oversight of equipment inventory. This position supervises and oversees four professional staff, one-two graduate assistants, approximately 100 trip leaders and student employees. The Assistant Director supervises the manager of the Indiana Memorial Union Bowling & Billiards department and is responsible for oversight of that operation. Bowling and Billiards is an auxiliary operation responsible for generating revenue for the Indiana Memorial Union while providing recreation
The Assistant Director serves as the program’s primary ambassador to a diverse range of campus departments and community organizations. The successful candidate will be expected to assist in the review and update of all relevant training and risk management materials used by the program, as well as to maintain the high safety and competency standards that the program participants deserve.
Responsibility for the IU Outdoor Adventures operation and two professional staff members, one to two graduate assistants, and a primarily student staff of approximately 80 trip leaders, instructors, and shop staff. Oversee the development and revision of course curricula, and authorize grading procedures for all of IUOA’s academic courses through the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies within the School of Public Health. Supervise the IMU Bowling & Billiards operation and manager. Ensure an indoor recreation program and facility that meets the needs of the campus community and operates on a sound financial basis. Develop and manage an annual operating budget in excess of $600,000; ensure financial, capital, and human resources are used efficiently and effectively, and that the budget is well managed to meet the needs of the Indiana Memorial Union and the School of Public Health. Provide leadership and support for adventure trips, courses, technical trainings, workshops, and seminars in a range of outdoor leadership skills and topics. Maintain comprehensive risk management procedures, policies, and processes in cooperation with the Office of Insurance, Loss Control, and Claims. Share in the direction and administration of the overall IMU through serving as a member of the Leadership Team. Lead and/or participate in committees, task forces, or projects as assigned. Represent the IMU to the campus, community, and professional associations through involvement in programs, committees, and projects as appropriate.
Master's degree in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education, Experiential Education, Business Administration, or a related field and five years of experience working in outdoor leadership, university recreation, and/or other adventure programming and three years of experience administering an outdoor recreation program. Documentation of at least 300 field days in outdoor recreation leadership. Experience teaching and leading three or more of the following areas: rock climbing, whitewater paddling, flatwater paddling, ice climbing, winter camping, cross country skiing, mountain biking, wilderness medicine, Leave No Trace, and back-country travel.
Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
Wilderness First Responder.
Ability to safely drive with a trailer. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree. Certifications in two of the above outdoor recreation activities, not counting wilderness medicine. Knowledge of bowling and billiards. Experience managing a revenue-producing operation or business unit. Experience in Adobe Creative Suite and website design.
