The Director is the most senior on-site employee responsible for overseeing a high-functioning department comprising of 10-12 administrative professional staff, 2 custodial staff, 4 graduate assistants and approximately 200 part-time/student employees. This position oversees the department’s performance and provides leadership and advisement to our UAB client. This position oversees the financial management and risk mitigation of the 158,000 sq. ft. recreation center, including detailed financial reporting and planning for all program areas and services. The director is solely responsible for the management and organization of the $4.5 million department budget. The director provides vision for the most effective ways to advocate for the department mission as it supports the Division Student of Affairs. The director ensures the CENTERS’ student development model is properly applied to promote student learning and engagement. The Director applies the CENTERS Essential Attitudes for High Performance as the standard for leading the team. This position reports to CENTERS Assistant Vice President (AVP) and collaborates with other directors and their respective teams within the Division of Student Affairs.

Recently, ground was broken for a new $175 million stadium at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, to be named Protective Life Stadium, located less than one mile from UAB’s campus. The UAB Blazers will play home football games there starting in 2021.

Lead dynamic and comprehensive Campus Recreation Department.
Recruit, train, and evaluate a team of professional staff and student employees.
Create and support professional development opportunities for the team, including professional association involvement, training programs, advancement within Centers, and mentoring.
Lead the team in contributing to the Client’s strategic plan to increase student recruitment and retention.
Prepare and monitor income and expense budgets in accordance with UAB and CENTERS protocols.
Initiate departmental business planning; create membership and program driven operational goals.
Prepare and submit monthly executive summary, quarterly and annual reports in alignment with UAB values and requests.
Update the financial model regularly and monitor cost effective strategies to maximize resources.
Coordinate all capital equipment purchases and projects with UAB and CENTERS.
Create an environment that inspires innovation and effective student development outcomes.
Oversee evaluation and assessment, including: student recruitment and retention and participant satisfaction.
Develop and promote effective collaborative relationships among students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Build and maintain strong partnerships with other departments and affiliates on campus.
Assist in coordination of the department’s assessment and data collection plan.
Meet regularly with the AVP, Student Health and Well-being and VP, Student Affairs to discuss department effectiveness, fiscal recommendations and university initiatives.
Lead the annual staff retreat that involves updating the business plan, goals and action items and strategic vision and mission for the department.
Project & Facility Management:
Assist with all aspects of lifecycle asset management and capital project planning.
Serve on university and divisional committees to assist in coordinating related policies and campus-wide events.
Program & Brand Development:
Oversee departmental branding and promotional efforts.
Lead a team that delivers comprehensive recreation, wellness and fitness programs, including: Group Exercise, Wellness, Personal Training, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Summer Camps, Aquatics, Athletic Training, and Outdoor Adventure.
Participate in centralized strategic planning and initiatives, with a focus on the Program of Innovation.
Communicate regularly with Assistant Vice President regarding both company-wide and site specific initiatives.
Act as a liaison between Centers corporate office and professional site team.
Act as a mentor to other site leaders as needed, providing guidance, support and lessons learned.
Serve as on-site account manager for the client and work closely to lead and assist client deliverables.

Master's degree; MBA preferred
Must have at least seven (7) years of professional experience in a university recreation environment.
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities; previous experience as a director preferred.
Demonstrated budgetary experience (preferred scale: $3-6 million); proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Demonstrated personnel management experience (preferred scale: 3-5 direct reports).
Ability to write concise, logical reports; proficiency in presenting proposals/reports to large groups.
Knowledge of industry standard practices
Demonstrated experience and ability to work as part of, and lead a collaborative, professional team.
Entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm.
