Under the direction of the Associate Director of Programs, manages the Aquatics program including planning, budgeting, and supervision of all aquatic programs that serve the university students and members of the Student Recreation Center. The position is responsible for training and mentoring a large number of students. The position has program and policy development expectations.
Total responsibility for development, design, and coordination of Aquatics programs for students and members of the Student Recreation Center that are concurrent with up to date trends in the campus recreation industry including management of, maintenance of, and pool preparation for Shea Natatorium, Student Health Center Therapy Pool, Campus Lake area and Boat Dock.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate approximately 50+ student staff employed as Lifeguards, swim instructor, Aquatic supervisors, and clerical staff. Supervision of students gaining fieldwork and internship experience.
Manage, coordinate, develop and implement Aquatics activities, programs and special events that serve the Kinesiology Department, Division I Swimming and Diving teams, Masters and Saluki Swim Club, student organizations and community agencies, as well as serving as the regional competitive aquatics center for over 150 miles to create and sustain educational opportunities.
Responsible for development and implementation of the safety and risk management procedures for Aquatics programs and facilities. This includes the staffing and operation of the department's CPR and First Aid labs, monitoring certifications and training necessary to meet the highest industry standards available CPR/AED, First Aid, and lifeguards.
Directly responsible for development and management and implementation of a comprehensive learn to swim program for Students and Youth.
Budget responsibilities include effective oversight and management of the Aquatics area including wages and salaries of student staff. Develop and evaluate necessary equipment needs for purchasing and maintaining property inventory for Aquatics department.
Develop and implement Aquatic special events to enhance the student development experience and assist in retention of students at SIU.
Directly supervise and assist in the evaluation of one professional Pool Tender.
Coordinate the assessment of the Aquatics programs, services, facilities and staff through surveys, focus groups and similar methods. This includes learning outcomes and customer satisfaction. Complete and submit reports, evaluation, tracking, participant records and other project and position related paperwork and presentations.
Cultivate and collaborate with both on and off campus partners including associated Student Affairs departments, Academic Units, Saluki Athletics, and the Carbondale Park District.
Assist the marketing staff with the marketing and publicity of the Aquatics programs, facilities and services including website, public presentations, social media, and printed materials.
Knowledge and experience in the development of Lifeguards, Swim Instructors and Outdoor Campus Lake attendants.
Knowledge and ability to operate a Recreational Pool within University and State Health guidelines
Knowledge and ability to teach swim lessons to Students and Youth.
Previous experience with Fusion or similar software systems.
Previous experience with hiring, training, scheduling and evaluation of staff in a campus recreation setting.
Certifications including American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid.Knowledge and ability to conduct and document equipment inventory.
