The mission of UW Recreation is to provide safe, accessible, and dynamic recreation experiences to engage students in growth and wellbeing.
The Fitness Manager oversees a comprehensive Fitness program for UW Recreation, which includes oversight and supervision of approximately 80 class offerings per quarter. They will develop and implement policies and procedures for all program operations in accordance with department and University rules, and industry standards.They will recruit, hire, train, schedule and supervise approximately 35 temporary staff. They will plan and allocate budgeted resources. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Programs.

Recruit, hire, train and supervise the cardio, dance, strength & conditioning instructional temporary employee staff of approximately 35.
Ensure employees have proper up-to-date training certifications for specific fitness programs and first aid administration, as well as all department-mandated training.
Process semimonthly payroll in accordance with department and University policy and procedures.
Manage employees and schedules to meet University student and temporary employee requirements.
Maintain oversight of a comprehensive Fitness program in accordance with industry standards and department policies to ensure compliance.
Plan and implement the Fitness program, utilizing current and future technology, which includes: scheduling, marketing and promotion, registration, facility reservation, policy enforcement, equipment and program evaluation, assessment, quarterly and annual reporting, program development, student development, and interdepartmental networking.
Develop and implement trainings and meetings with employees on major policy and procedure topics of concern, including: equipment and AV needs, risk management and emergency response, scheduling, and class structure.
Plan, develop, implement, and lead the Fitness Instructor Training program using the American Council on Exercise Group Fitness Instructor curriculum.
Establish and implement the Fitness program policies and procedures, reviewing annually to update for program and process improvement.
Evaluate new program requests to determine their viability and compatibility with the department before adding them as new class offerings.
Establish and implement Fitness and class specific risk management practices, policies, and procedures.
Compile quarterly and annual statistical program data for department reports.
Serve as the department’s resource on Fitness programming related questions.
Perform an annual audit of the Fitness program to evaluate and analyze based on the Departments strategic plan and goals.
Host Fitness workshops and teach Fitness classes as needed.
Maintain Fitness class quarterly schedule for on-going classes, drop-in classes, and Fit For You programming.
Provide on-site event coordination for major Fitness special events.
Monitor and arrange the use of Fitness equipment throughout the year.
Supervise the operations activities at all of the department facilities and fields as needed. Work cooperatively with other members of the department staff in the interest of providing a comprehensive program designed to the meet the needs of the University community.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with other UW departments, local fitness facilities, and industry associations.
Prepare an annual budget for the Fitness program. Project expenditures in staffing, equipment, and contract services.
Manage the Fitness budget and maintain internal control of all expenditures and ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance.
Evaluate Fitness equipment needs and make purchases.
Approve Fitness certification needs and handle reimbursements.
Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Physical Education, or related field.
Current group exercise certification in at least one of the following: ACSM, ACE, AFFA, and/or NCSA.
Two years’ experience in managing a fitness program and knowledge of fitness programming.
Demonstrated supervision experience, including hiring, training and evaluating staff, payroll and general personnel functions.
Two years’ experience teaching a variety of group fitness formats, with groups of 10 or more.
Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED (or obtained within six months of hire).
Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Physical Education, or related field.
Experience teaching the ACE Group Fitness Instructor curriculum.
Current Schwinn, Keiser, or LeMond Cycling certification.
Knowledge of scheduling and/or recreation management software (ex. Fusion).
