The Department of Recreation & Wellness at UNC Greensboro, which is housed within the Division of Student Affairs, is seeking candidates for the Graduate Assistant of Outdoor Adventures position for the 2020-2021 academic year.
The Graduate Assistant position is a part-time, 9-month appointment from August 2020 to May 2021; specific dates to be determined upon hire. The assistantship is renewable for a second year appointment, upon a successful performance review, and may also include summer employment opportunities. Graduate Assistants are expected to work an average of 20 hours per week.
The Graduate Assistant will receive an in-state tuition scholarship, and a stipend of $10,000 for the 9-month appointment. Graduate Assistants will also receive additional funding for professional development opportunities and/or certifications.
The Department of Recreation and Wellness fosters comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. Housed within the Division of Student Affairs, the RecWell team is comprised of more than 30 professional staff and graduate assistants, and over 200 student employees. We offer a variety of programs, services and experiences across our 10 program areas: Aquatics, Competitive Sports, Facilities, Fitness, Marketing, Membership, Outdoor Adventures, Special Events, Team QUEST, and Wellness. In August 2016, the department moved into the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, a new 216,000 sq. ft award-winning, LEED Gold Certified facility.
General qualifications for all Graduate Assistant positions:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
Admittance to a UNCG graduate program
Current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certifications (or ability to obtain upon hire)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work with diverse groups
Competent knowledge of general computer programs including Excel, Word, Power Point, Google Suite, etc
Successful completion of criminal background check
Previous experience working in an outdoor recreation and education program, including a rock climbing facility, equipment rental operations, and adventure-based trip program.
Trip leading experience in several of the following activities: rock climbing (indoor and outdoor setting), whitewater kayaking, sea and flat-water kayaking, backpacking/hiking, caving, and biking.
Current Wilderness First Responder certification required.
A valid driver’s license and approved driving record (driving check required at time of appointment)
OUTDOOR ADVENTURES GRADUATE ASSISTANT
The GA for Outdoor Adventures is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day management of Outdoor Adventures Program including the adventure trips program, climbing wall, and rental center operation.
Graduate Assistants are responsible for working 20 hours per week (minimum).
Assist with the daily operations of the trip program, rental program, and indoor climbing facility.
Assist with the leadership of adventure trips and other program events. Trips and events occur on weekdays, weekends, and over university breaks.
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate undergraduate student employees.
Assist with planning Spartan Outdoor Orientation Programs for incoming Freshmen during the summer with opportunity to lead programs in the summer.
Implement and evaluate emergency response drills for student employees.
Execute monthly payroll for student employees.
Assist with risk management planning and implementation of policies and procedure for all programs and facilities.
Maintain equipment inventory for all program areas.
Assist with equipment purchase, inventory, maintenance, and inspections.
Assist with Outdoor Adventures program budget planning.
Assist with program policy development and implementation.
Assist with marketing and promotion of trips, events, and climbing facility.
Work on special projects and serve on work committees within the Department of Recreation & Wellness and the Division of Student Affairs.
Assist with planning staff trainings, meetings, and other developmental opportunities for student-employees.
Coordinate promotional presentations across various units on campus.
Serve as a climbing wall supervisor and Trip staff member as necessary.
Summer employment opportunity with the program is available.
Assist with the instruction of a technical climbing course for the Kinesiology dept. with the possibility of teaching your own course as an adjunct professor.
Opportunity to lead extensive backcountry technical training trips with the OA professional staff.
Other duties as assigned.
