These positions are a 2-year (4 semester plus summer) commitment as a full-time graduate student working as a graduate assistant within the Recreational Sports Department. Each position will work an average of 20 hours per week and receive a $1,517.00 monthly stipend and tuition waiver (student comprehensive fee is the responsibility of the graduate assistant). All offers are made contingent on acceptance to a Virginia Tech Graduate Program.

Fitness and Wellbeing:
Responsibilities:Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellbeing and the Fitness Coordinator, responsibilities include development and supervision of a comprehensive Fitness and Wellbeing Program including group exercise, personal training, small group training, fitness assessment, strength and conditioning programming, wellbeing initiatives, and special events. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: leading evaluation committees, serving as an instructor for Exercise Leadership for-credit academic classes, planning ongoing education series, and implementing wellbeing programming.
Qualifications: Group Instruction OR Personal Training NCCA accredited fitness certification, 1-2 years of teaching/training experience. Preferred: experience in staff management, specialty certifications, involvement as an undergraduate in recreational sports.

Intramural Sports (2):
Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports and the Intramural Sports Coordinator, responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1) assist with planning, development, and implementation of all sport leagues/activities and special events/programs; 2) develop and conduct officials’ training clinics; 3) recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate sports officials/supervisors for intramural activities for major team sports; 4) promote and market intramural programs and activities; and 5) assist with student payroll, budget planning, policy development, and equipment inventory/purchasing process.
Qualifications: 1-2 years of involvement as an undergraduate in recreational sports programming with experience in staff management and supervision, intramural programming/administration, and sports officiating, as well as aspirations toward a career in recreational sports.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, this person’s responsibilities include assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive aquatics/instructional program comprising of adult and children swim lessons, and health and safety classes. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: oversee a supervisory student staff of four, assist in the hiring, training, supervising, and evaluation of part-time 60+ employees; and assisting with student payroll, web development, budget planning, policy development, and the equipment inventory/purchasing process.
Qualifications: LGI and/or WSI certifications. Preferred certifications: WSI-T, LGI-T, CPO, and/or AFO.

Marketing and Social Media:
Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Marketing Manager, this person’s responsibilities include: assisting with hiring, training, and supervising part-time student marketing personnel; working with marketing manager, Rec Sports program staff, and student employees/interns to manage and execute departmental marketing plan for programs, services, events and facilities; serving as an administrator for social media, including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and departmental website; creating photo, video, and written content in addition to leading students who do this as well; effectively and efficiently partnering with other university departments and serve as marketing liaison on campus committees.
Qualifications: 1-2 years (undergrad and/or professional) of involvement in recreational sports, sports marketing and/or related field, experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, effective oral and written communication skills, experience in social media content creation and management.

About Virginia Tech
The Department of Recreational Sports operates within the Division of Student Affairs. The Department maintains two recreation/wellness facilities: McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall. McComas Hall offers three basketball/volleyball courts, an eight-lane indoor swimming pool, a weight training and cardiovascular workout area, two fitness studios, spin studio, fitness assessment center, TRX and core area, locker and shower facilities, equipment check out, an elevated jogging track, and a lounge area. The facility is also home to the Student Health and Counseling Centers. War Memorial Hall offers an indoor swimming pool and diving well, 6 basketball courts, 13 racquetball courts, 2 wallyball courts, a gymnastics room, locker and shower facilities, a handball court, a weight room, volleyball courts, a squash court, saunas, a dance/fitness room, and a multi-purpose room. The Department provides programs and services in open recreation, fitness, aquatics, instructional programs, intramural sports, sport clubs, outdoor recreation and special events.
