General Statement of Duties
The primary purpose of the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator is to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive outdoor education and adventures program from its inception, including oversight of the existing Emory Rock Climbing Arena. This position will be responsible for the supervision of four unique areas: trip planning, equipment rental, teambuilding/challenge program and the climbing wall. The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator also serves as the Co-Director during summer months in the administration and oversight of the Emory Sports Fitness Camp. As a member of the Recreation & Wellness team, this position also assists with Recreation & Wellness events and programs. The Outdoor Recreation program consists of structured experiential education programming options to foster health and wellbeing, learning, leadership, and inclusion for the Emory community. This position has equal programmatic responsibilities at two (2) facilities: the Woodruff Physical Education Center (WPEC) on Main Campus and the Student Activity and Academic Center (SAAC) on the Clairmont Campus.
Responsibilities involve a wide variety of administrative and supervisory duties including, but not limited to, personnel management, fiscal management, student development, outdoor trip planning, risk management, facility and equipment management, marketing/promotions, policy development, and partnership with and advisement of the Outdoor Emory student organization. This position is a full-time, twelve-month, exempt professional staff member with the Department of Recreation &Wellness and reports to the Director of Recreation & Wellness.
Job Functions and Responsibilities:
PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION (40%)
Establish and directly oversee a comprehensive, diversified, and inclusive adventure program, climbing arena, equipment rental, teambuilding/challenge programs and summer camp program including, but not limited to, program management, policy development, trip planning, equipment purchasing and management, staff training, assessment, risk management, special events, budget development and oversight.
Coordinate all planning, staff supervision, training, equipment, facility upkeep and programming for the Emory Rock Climbing Arena.
Train, advise and support Outdoor Emory, an active registered student organization with 600+ members.
Coordinate continued development of pre-Orientation trips, student trip leaders, risk management and overall management of the organization and programs.
Collaborate with University programs and departments as well as external partners to increase awareness and develop joint outdoor and experiential education programs, such as Women in the Wilderness, in an effort to build a sense of community around and through the Outdoor Recreation program. Liaise with other Campus entities in regards to student conduct, participation, marketing, events, etc.
Evaluate each aspect of the Outdoor Recreation program and compile statistical data on participation and injuries.
Assist in the development of short-term and long-term goals for the outdoor recreation program with a formal assessment process. Assist in attaining pertinent assessment data regarding customer satisfaction and participant & student staff learning experiences for regular analysis and annual reporting. Maintain statistical data for all programs within areas of responsibility.
Maintain current knowledge national standards and trends in outdoor recreation, climbing/bouldering activities and summer camp programs and related challenges within Higher Education.
Serve as a department ranking staff member on duty for recreational programs; which includes, but is not limited to, serving as a first responder for emergency situations and providing emergency care, providing customer service, resolving conflicts and making decisions and judgments regarding program and facility usage.
Provide input on departmental policy decisions and strategic planning.
Evaluate equipment and facilities to ensure risk management and appropriate materials/procedures are utilized at all times.
Manage the outdoor equipment rental program, which offers a variety of equipment available for students to check out. Oversee equipment inventory, including purchasing, maintenance and repair, and assessing equipment condition to ensure that equipment is clean and ready for use for all programs and rentals.
Develop a strategic marketing and communication plan that engages a diverse student and employee population.
Create and revise all manuals and policies for the Outdoor Recreation program and Emory Rock Climbing Arena.
Serve in an on-call function to support recreation facilities and programs.
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends when necessary.
Additional duties as assigned.
PROFESSIONAL AND STUDENT STAFFING & DEVELOPMENT (25%)
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, evaluate and develop 50+ student employees annually for operations, teambuilding/challenge facilitators, climbing wall attendants and trip leaders.
Organize and conduct meetings and training sessions each semester and as needed.
Instruct a for-credit physical education class within the general education requirement curriculum.
Create opportunities for experiential learning and transferrable skill development for student employees and participants alike.
Provide leadership and guidance to Outdoor Emory student organization and student leaders.
Maintain files documenting training, timekeeping and certifications as required.
FACILITY AND RISK MANAGEMENT (20%)
Serve as the primary Risk Manager for all Outdoor Recreation programs and Emory Rock Climbing Arena related issues.
Develop and evaluate comprehensive risk management policies, procedures and guidelines for all Outdoor Recreation programs, the Emory Rock Climbing Arena facility and internal summer camp programs.
Ensure risk management guidelines are in line with industry standards, departmental plans and the University's risk management policies and procedures.
Instruct CPR/AED/First Aid courses for internal student and professional staff to ensure policy compliance.
Liaison to Athletics and Recreation Facilities & Operations staff and Emory Facilities Management.
Assist with informal recreation operations and drop in recreation patrons.
SUMMER CAMP AND OUTREACH (10%)
Serve as the Co-Director for the Emory Sports Fitness Camp, an on-campus Summer day camp for children
Assist in the development and management of an internal summer camp program which includes, but is not limited to, recruitment and hiring of camp counselors, staff, and volunteers; training of camp counselors and support staff; researching grant opportunities, funding applications, and coordinating grant compliance; evaluation of camp counselors; developing effective written programs and learning outcomes of the camp’s daily activities; and record keeping and assessment of the overall program.
Work with staff, campus partners and local businesses to develop a summer outdoor education day camp program separate from Emory Sports Fitness Camp consistent with the needs and interests of the Emory community.
Active membership in a variety of on-campus, divisional, national and local committees, including the NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation and/or Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE). Serve on at least one committee, project team, or program within the University Community.
Publication in professional journals, conference presentations and/or representation in other Higher Education associations.
Promote and travel on domestic and international outdoor adventure trips to foster student development, develop relationships with alumni, serve on committees and supervise student staff and participants.
Assist in development of alumni relations and fundraising events. Seek external partnerships and sponsors to enhance the Outdoor Recreation program.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (5%)
Prepare, forecast and monitor budgets as it relates to the four areas of the Outdoor Recreation program.
Maintain records of program participation, revenue generation, and expenditures. Consistently monitor all revenue and expense budgets.
Monitor and maintain records of all Outdoor Recreation and Emory Rock Climbing Arena equipment including: verifying insurance coverage as required and coordinate equipment purchases/replacements.
Conduct and audit all payroll procedures for up to 50+ student employees.
Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management, Physical Education, Recreation/Leisure Administration, Education or related field. A minimum of two (2) years of related experience in the outdoor industry, preferably within a collegiate recreation program. Wilderness First Aid certification. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
Outdoor trip planning and leadership experience in a variety of adventure activities including, but not limited to, backpacking, paddle sports, and rock climbing. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with administration, planning, assessment, and implementation of outdoor program staff training. Experience managing outdoor rental equipment. Basic knowledge of the principles, philosophy, standards and practices of recreation and outdoor or adventure-based camp administration (e.g., program planning, leadership, risk management, budgeting, marketing & public relations). Demonstrated ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated PC computer competency and skills. The ability to plan, promote and evaluate a wide range of recreation services and events for the Emory community through new outdoor recreation and summer camp programs. The successful candidate will promote and cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity, engage in evidence-based decision-making, and promote student development and learning.
Master's degree in Sport Management, Physical Education, Recreation/Leisure Administration, Higher Education Administration or related field. 3-5 years or more graduate or professional experience working in an outdoor recreation setting, preferably with college-aged participants. CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification. Wilderness First Responder certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Leave No Trace Trainer or Leave No Trace Master Educator and/or Climbing Wall Instructor. NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) and/or Registry of Certified Recreational Sports Professionals (RCRSP) member.
