Job Summary: The Alabama Aquatic Program is a unit in the Department of University Recreation and Division of Student Life. This position contributes to the success of University Recreation through strategic management of the Aquatic Program which supports recreational swimming, varsity swimming and diving team activities, academic classes, sport club activities, swim lessons, and special events. Programming and activities occur in four pools at two different locations on campus, the Aquatic Center and Student Recreation Center. These programs focus on health, holistic wellness, safety education, and leadership development.
Additional Department Summary: The Coordinator for Aquatic Programs is responsible for leadership and oversight of 50-75 student staff members. The position reports to and works closely with the Assistant Director for Aquatic Programs on strategic planning to ensure that programmatic, financial, and experiential goals are met. Primary duties include but are not limited to: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising a staff of lifeguards and aquatic instructors; programmatic calendar creation; ensuring adequate staffing levels; developing and managing revenue producing programs; assisting with the department’s safety trainings; and a high level of risk assessment. This position works to maximize student and patron experiences through quality programs, facilities, and customer experiences. The Coordinator is responsible for fostering an environment for diversity, inclusion, and outreach through both programs and services offered.
Responsible for completing required training that is related to laws and regulations, that creates a more hospitable and respectful workplace; and safer work environment. Responsible for holding staff accountable for completion of required training. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of aquatic programming experience; OR a Master's degree or higher and one (1) year of aquatic programming experience. Graduate assistantship and/or intern experience in aquatic programming accepted as work experience. The incumbent will be expected to acquire relevant certifications as a Lifeguard Instructor and/or Swim Instructor Trainer. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Skills and Knowledge: Experience in managing aquatic programming and staff including evaluation of lifeguards, program risk, and handling emergencies. Capacity to teach and train aquatic and life safety courses when necessary. Evidence of training staff in student learning and development outcomes. Ability to manage staff at multiple venues for a wide array of activities from recreational swimming to competitive swimming events. Effective customer relations, strong interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills. Aptitude to prioritize multiple work responsibilities in time-sensitive situations, work with limited supervision, supervise and delegate work to student staff, and exercise good judgment. Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through demonstrating self-awareness, understanding and valuing others, demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities, interacting effectively with a diversity of people, fostering equality and inclusion.
Competence in fiscal management, assessment, and evaluation. Capability to work effectively as an individual and as a member of a team. Knowledge and experience with personal computers and standard software applications (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, database management, etc).
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Sport Management, Higher Education, or similar field of study. Two (2) years of progressive experience leading comprehensive aquatics programs at the university/college level. Current American Red Cross Instructor Certifications in Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider, First Aid, Swim Instructor, Blood Borne Pathogens, Administration of Emergency Oxygen, and Water Safety. Familiarity with competitive swimming and/or diving electronic timing/scoring systems. Knowledge of educational theories and student development, demonstrates highly critical and creative thinking towards program evaluations, and demonstrates effective judgment.
