Sam Houston State University has announced three (3) Graduate Assistantships for the upcoming Academic Year in the following areas:
Outdoor Recreation and Camp Operations
All positions will assist in guiding the Recreational Sports Department in a manner consistent with the goals of the department, Division of Student Services, and the mission of Sam Houston State University.
The Graduate Assistant of Fitness will report to the Assistant Director of Fitness.
Propose, plan, and complete a yearly graduate assistant project
Assist in creating and conducting events, programs, and workshops
Prepare group fitness and specialty class schedules
Hire, train, and supervise group fitness, personal training, and lead staff
Develop and conduct training and evaluations for fitness staff
Assists in teaching the Group Fitness Instructor and ACE Personal Trainer Prep Courses
Conduct and plan monthly staff meetings and staff development opportunities
Purchase, inventory, maintain and assess equipment
Assist with promoting and marketing fitness classes, programs, and other Recreational Sports events
Update and implement instructor training and staff manuals
Assist with the administrative duties
Conduct EAP evaluations with Fitness staff
Assist the Recreational Sports department with other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Nationally recognized Group Fitness and/or Personal Training Certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA, NASM) required. Experience instructing group fitness classes and/or personal training is required. Candidates must have knowledge/experience in recreational sports or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU graduate school. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
The Graduate Assistant for Aquatics and Safety is responsible for assisting with the organization and administration of a comprehensive Aquatics program, including but not limited to: recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating student staff. Supervision of three aquatic facilities, develop and conduct student staff orientations and meetings, assist with payroll processes, equipment purchasing and perform other duties as assigned.
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Aquatics & Safety. This position helps supervise the day-to-day operations of the assigned program areas. The position also provides day-to-day direction, guidance, and supervision to the students assigned to support the recreational sports programs.
May include but are not limited to the following:
Assist in guiding the Recreational Sports Department in a manner that is consistent with the goals of the Department, Division of Student Affairs, and the Mission of Sam Houston State University.
Recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating undergraduate student staff
Supervision of the Recreational Sports Center and University Camp swimming pools mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekend hours.
Develop and conduct student staff orientation, in-service trainings, and workshops
Assist with payroll processes for student staff
Assist with purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of facility and equipment
Assist with scheduling of facilities, which include the HKC, swimming pool, and University Camp Swimming Pool
Assist with the operation of two Hydro Therapy tubs in the Johnson Coliseum
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Health Sciences, or related field. Candidates must have knowledge/experience in recreation or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU Graduate School. Basic Lifeguard certification or the ability to acquire. CPR/First Aid/AED Certification for the Professional Rescuer or the ability to acquire. Lifeguard Instructor Certification preferred. Water Safety Instructor preferred. Experience in maintaining pool chemicals.
OUTDOOR RECREATION AND CAMP OPERATIONS
This position reports to the Senior Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation.
This is an on-site position that includes private housing at the University Camp.
Serve as the on-site camp host
Facilitate groups and manage staff for the challenge course high and low elements
Communicate all relevant information to program participants
Assist in scheduling student staff (challenge course and program staff)
Assist with student payroll
Assist in the purchase, inventory, and maintenance of all challenge course equipment
Evaluate and recommend changes as needed in outdoor program activities and staff needs
Assist with policy development
Develop and conduct outdoor staff training clinics
Assist in the hiring and evaluation of the outdoor staff
Assist with promoting and marketing outdoor recreation activities
Assist in planning and conducting Recreational Sports special events
Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation, Natural Resource Management, Recreation, Business or related field. Candidates must have knowledge/experience in outdoor recreation, challenge course operation, strong interpersonal skills, and acceptance into SHSU Graduate School. Wilderness First Responder Certification and Challenge Course Certifications preferred.
All successful Graduate Assistant candidates will demonstrate the following:
Bachelor's Degree in a related area
Acceptance into the SHSU Graduate program and enrollment in 6 hours or more in graduate courses. If you are a new graduate student at SHSU and begin work during the summer, you must be enrolled in graduate summer courses.
Computer knowledge, including proficiency with Windows-based computer system and Microsoft applications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies
Excellent customer service skills

Additional Salary Information: Tuition waivers are granted to cover nine credits of course work during the fall and spring semesters, a $9,000 stipend from September to May and an option for summer employment. Graduate students have access to health insurance through the University. Graduate student is responsible for paying his/her own fees. Professional development assistance is available.
