NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative leader for the position of Assistant Director, Aquatics. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to cultivate world class wellness and recreation programs, services, and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Associate Director, Wellness and Recreation.
The Assistant Director, Aquatics is responsible for the leadership, programming, and operation of the Carmichael Complex Aquatics Center (25 yard pool with dive well and a 50 meter competition pool) with emphasis on providing a safe, well maintained, and proficiently staffed environment. This position will provide significant instruction and development of students and manage instructional aquatic programs, risk management, schedules, event management, equipment maintenance, and strategic financial planning and budgeting. The aquatics center is used by the NC State Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving programs, Health and Exercise Studies academic program, numerous student clubs and organizations, campus partners, youth swim teams, and external users.
In order to successfully accomplish this, the following is required:
Provide strategic leadership and supervise one full time professional staff and indirectly supervise lifeguards, aquatics supervisors, lifeguard instructors, swim lesson instructors, CPR, First Aid and AED Land Instructors, and program assistants. Ensure staff provides the highest level of customer service for users.
Provide strategic leadership for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, mentoring, and coaching of aquatics student staff with a focus on student development and learning.
Develop guidelines, procedures, and manage the aquatics center. Document and follow-up all incidents and accidents that occur in the facility.
Manage the aquatics center routine and preventative maintenance plans that include water chemistry, mechanical systems and components, and pool equipment.
Coordinate repairs and solutions appropriately through contact with Wellness and Recreation staff, University Facility Operations, Housekeeping, Landscape Services, or other appropriate agency as needed.
Manage the aquatics center budget. Coordinate purchasing efforts to maintain appropriate equipment/supplies inventory following department and university guidelines.
Develop guidelines and procedures for all internal and external groups utilizing aquatics center to ensure proper compliance with department and University guidelines.
Assess, evaluate, and mitigate risks in collaboration with departmental risk management representatives.
Manage the aquatics center schedule including reservations, rentals, and maintenance in conjunction with the Reservations Manager. Work closely with NC State Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving programs, Health and Exercise Studies academic program, numerous student clubs and organizations, campus partners, youth swim teams, and external constituents to meet the needs of all users.
Serve as the Certified Pool Operator for the aquatics center.
Develop and ensure quality standards are met for the aquatics center with a focus on water chemistry.
Conduct water testing and monitor water quality to ensure compliance with established water quality standards by adjusting chemicals as needed.
Oversee testing and documentation of water tests and the operation of the filtration and chlorination system.
Perform routine maintenance on filtration systems and calibrate automated controls as needed.
Inspect and maintain chemical feed systems, pool filters, and plumbing hardware.
Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the aquatics center including the pool deck, storage rooms, and pump room.
Promote the aquatics center and programs in coordination with the marketing and communications staff.
Provide expert onsite supervision of staff.
Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.
Bachelor’s degree in recreation, higher education administration, sports management, or related field. If in progress, must be completed by the date of hire.
Two or more years of experience in aquatics facility management and programming.

Demonstrated knowledge of lifeguard safety skills, aquatic event management, and water safety.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, TRAINING/EDUCATION
Master’s degree in recreation, higher education administration, sports management, or a related field.
Four or more years of experience in collegiate recreational sports aquatics facility management and programming;
Wake County Pool Operator Certification.
REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Lifeguard Instructor (LGI);
First Aid/CPR Instructor;
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or the ability to obtain within six months of employment;
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO).
