The Department of Recreation and Wellness is seeking a creative leader for the Assistant Director of Marketing & Membership position. The Assistant Director creates and implements a comprehensive marketing initiative program to support all programs, services and activities within the Recreation and Wellness department at ODU. The Assistant Director also oversees the development, access, maintenance and recruitment of current and future memberships. The Assistant Director is also responsible for hiring, training and supervising full time personnel and student employees. This position is responsible for maintaining current certifications and continuing education related to the marketing field. This position assists in long range planning and implementation of departmental programming as it relates to the overall mission within the division.
Work tasks and duties
Develop, plan and implement departmental marketing and promotions to support special events, programming and services. Lead the marketing and promotion utilizing various means including graphic design, publications, and multi-media sources. Provide tours and presentations about department offerings for potential member groups as requested. Provide content updates, graphic support and design templates for department website and social media platforms. Manage department visual brand, outreach events, fairs and other departmental programs. Work with division customer relation software to engage students and track and report participation.
Coordinate membership and program sales, services and member facility access. Support the Coordinator of Memberships in the recruitment, retention, and stewardship of students, members and guests. Implement policies and procedures for selling, maintaining, and retaining membership, program and service registrations. Assist in coordinating membership management software system including system administration, policies and procedures, and card access including determining special admittance requests. Maintain accurate files.
Supervise and evaluate one full time Membership Coordinator. Hire, train and oversee part time student employees including graduate assistant, hourly employees, and student staff positions (i.e. Membership Service Specialist, Marketing staff) to ensure excellent customer service and production. Promote student leadership opportunities that support departmental student learning outcomes. Facilitate staff development that encourages training, managing and mentoring of peers.
Develop reports that support departmental initiatives and outcomes. Provide feedback regarding member and guest experiences. Provide project support as needed.
Completion of special projects and performing other duties assigned by the Director of Recreation and Wellness.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Excellent organizational, management, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other individuals and departments on campus and in the surrounding community. High level of organizational skills and proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner. Proven ability to manage projects and deliver results. Excellent written and oral communication skills: excellent intrapersonal skills. Ability to think critically and present information is essential. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Flash, Adobe Enterprise Marketing, HTML, InDesign, Adobe design suite, CRM and willing to learn new programs. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Special licenses, registration or certification:
First Aid, CPR and AED certifications required or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Possession of or ability to acquire a valid Virginia State driver’s license is required.
Education or training:
Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related field; or Bachelor’s degree in the areas previously indicated along with experience equivalent to a Master’s degree.
Level and type of experience:
Work experience within a collegiate setting is preferred. Some experience with sales and recruitment of memberships. Some experience in designing and maintaining websites and social media platforms. Considerable experience in marketing to and reaching targeted demographics. Experience in researching and applying best practices and trends in regards to branding and incentivizing participation. Basic experience critiquing designs and concepts.
