The University of South Alabama Department of Campus Recreation is seeking two graduate assistants in the areas of Aquatics and Fitness/Camps. The preferred start date for the Aquatics GA is Summer 2020. The preferred start date for the Fitness/Camps GA is Fall 2020.
Graduate Assistants are required to work 20 hours per week in fall, spring, and summer semesters and in between semesters. Regular early morning, evening, or weekend work is expected. Official university holidays apply.
Compensation: Tuition and registration fee waiver plus stipend of $3,333 per semester (max $10,000 per year.) The opportunity to receive funding for professional development, including certifications and conferences, is also available.
Graduate Assistants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree and been accepted into a graduate program at USA. Candidate should review the complete list of graduate programs and admission deadlines.
Candidates must pass a background check. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama.
Fitness/Camps Requirements and Responsibilities:
The Graduate Assistant of Fitness/Camps will be responsible for assisting with the organization, programming, marketing, and scheduling of group fitness classes and instructors, personal trainers, and special events. Other duties include personal training clients, teaching group fitness classes, and performing fitness assessments. Group fitness classes are held year-round and are only canceled on official university holidays when the main campus is closed.
The Graduate Assistant of Fitness/Camps will also be responsible for assisting with summer camps. The department offers week-long summer camps for rising 1st-8th grade children. Camps are physically active camps and activities include swimming, rock wall climbing, sports, and games. Camp responsibilities will be predominantly managerial (waivers, health forms, expense reporting, etc).
A current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
A current certification as a Personal Trainer and/or Group Exercise Certification (AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM, or other accredited certification required.)
Proficiency in teaching a minimum of four of the following group exercise formats: step aerobics, high intensity interval training (H.I.I.T.), bootcamp, suspension training (such as TRX®), aqua fitness/water aerobics, indoor cycling (such as Spinning®), strength/weight training, yoga, pilates, barre or dance-based aerobics (such as Zumba®.) Candidate will be expected to teach 3-5 group fitness classes per week, as well as sub on an as-needed basis.
Proficiency in conducting fitness assessments and personal training clients.
Aquatics Requirements and Responsibilities
The Aquatics Graduate Assistant is responsible for scheduling and supervision of approximately 25 lifeguards, supervisors, and/or water safety instructors, including regular re-training and/or in-service training as needed. This person will be expected to assist with planning and managing a schedule of aquatics events, courses, and swimming lessons.
Current certification as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
Current certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguard
At least two years’ experience as a lifeguard supervisor or managing a swimming lesson program
