Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Department of Recreational Sports and Athletic Facilities has an exciting opening for an Assistant Director for Recreational Sports and Athletic Facilities, Fitness and Wellness. This Assistant Director position is a key member of the Rose-Hulman Sports and Recreation Center that it is responsible for the functional operation of a comprehensive fitness and wellness program, which includes: group exercise, fitness assessments, exercise incentive programs, wellness programs, fitness floor operations and personal training.
Develop and implement the strategic plans for the Department of Recreational Sports and Athletic Facilities as it relates to fitness and wellness; Responsible for supervision and operational management of fitness and wellness programs; Recruit, hire, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate group exercise instructors and personal trainers; Spend a minimum of one hour per day in the SRC cardio and weight room to provide exercise assistance and advice to SRC patrons; Know all facility (specifically the weight room and cardio room) rules/procedures and proactively enforce them; Coordinate, plan and implement various health and wellness programs (i.e. guest speakers, seminars, special events, nutrition classes); Implement program assessment tools to assess market needs and interests, participant satisfaction and make recommendations for overall program and process improvement; Evaluate SRC patron outcomes and customer service; Maintain statistical information on fitness and wellness program participation numbers; Prepare and submit monthly and annual fitness and wellness statistical reports; Create and manage a marketing plan that will accurately demonstrate fitness activities available to the campus community; Present and display educational information on fitness and wellness topics including nutrition, strength training and cardio vascular fitness on a regular basis through social media outlets, handouts and digital display screens; Develop and implement risk management policies and procedures associated with the fitness floor operations, fitness assessments, group exercise and related events; Purchase equipment for fitness and wellness programs and activities; Assist in the purchasing of exercise equipment for fitness floor operations; Inventory, maintain and manage all exercise equipment; Create and manage in-house training of fitness instructors and personal trainers; Administer risk management program for all areas of the facility (i.e. Emergency Action Plans including inclement weather, fire, active shooter, etc.., personal injury records, red shirt drill coordinator); Perform in-service training for all fitness instructors, personal trainers, and weight room staff; Responsible for coordinating relationships with outside vendors providing wellness services for the campus community; Be active professionally through research, publications, presentations, speaking engagements and involvement in professional associations; Provide staff coverage during evenings, weekends and special events as determined by department and function need (varsity athletics, evaluating group exercise classes, personal training, staff in-services, and special events); Fill-in as group exercise instructor when needed to prevent cancelling of group exercise classes; Assists with the day to day operation of the Sports and Recreation Center and athletic fields; Evaluate facility needs and program development for the department; ; Manage membership software applications, which includes access control, participant tracking and program registration; Maintain monthly management reports for facility access and membership experience; Attend all required departmental and student staff meetings and in-services/trainings; Serve as an active contributor, provide leadership, promote collaboration and facilitate effective communication across the department, the institute and campus/community partners; Participate in on-campus and community committees that benefit the mission of the department and institute; other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises exercise staff; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws; Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Physical Education, Recreation Administration, Exercise and Sport Science and/or related field; thorough knowledge of campus recreation as demonstrated by a minimum of two years of employment in a college/university campus recreation program; two to three years of demonstrated working experience in a campus recreation fitness/wellness program preferred; proven experience in management and maintenance of facilities related to fitness and wellness programming preferred; demonstrated proficiency in computers and related programs.
