The Assistant Director for Aquatic Education and Programs will report to and work collaboratively with the Associate Director - Aquatics, to develop, oversee, and administer a comprehensive and progressive aquatic programs and certification services that meet the demands of the university community, while also promoting our mission. To include personnel and fiscal management, inventory control, program development and promotion. Deliver recreation and wellness programs designed to promote teamwork, active lifestyles, and leadership skills. Contribute to the preparations and management of aquatic and recreation events. Plan, schedule and coordinate all program activities. Participate in the development and implementation of program policies and procedures while collaborating with the integrated communications team to market programs. Conduct regular assessments of programs to measure effectiveness, and implement new initiatives based on industry trends. Participate in budget allocation and program outreach efforts. Develop and cultivate relationships with campus and non-campus constituents. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Program Management: Manage aquatic education and certification programs, including: learn to swim; lifeguard certifications; CPR/AED certifications; water safety instructor certifications. Serve as point of contact for the American Red Cross. Develop appropriate programming, policies, and procedures to ensure safe, inclusive, and customer centric programs and services. Work collaboratively with RecWell staff to provide certification instruction to meet the needs for applicable staff. Develop appropriate marketing and promotional strategies. Work collaboratively with member services to manage operational computing applications related to aqua education class registrations and associated business functions. Coordinate customer service feedback processes and develop strategies to optimize customer service. Develop and implement assessments to measure customer satisfactions, participation statistics, and learning outcomes.
Personnel Management: Management of aquatic education and certification staff. Hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate student/part-time staff. Provide ongoing training and development opportunities through staff meetings, in-service trainings, and evaluations. Prepare, review, and submit hiring documents and manage proper payroll records and procedures. Ensure appropriate certifications are completed and request appropriate network and building security privileges. Ensure that staff learning outcomes are developed and associated assessment is conducted.
Financial Oversight: Develop and manage operating and personnel budgets for assigned areas. Maintain budgets in accordance with division practices and tolerances. Reconcile expenditures and ensure prudent stewardship of resources. Work to ensure that business functions employ “best practices” and are consistent with university standards. Maintain appropriate inventory control procedures for program specific inventory. Work collaboratively with senior staff and business office to regularly assess appropriate fee structures.
Building and Event Management: Assist with preparation and management of reservations and events; including facility set-up/tear-down and necessary maintenance/cleaning. Assist with the management of associated technology. Assist with pool operations including water quality, chemical feeders, filtration and delivery/receiving of chemicals. Assist with facility coverage during events, holidays and breaks.
Other Duties: Collaborate and assist with other divisional and departmental planning, policy development, implementation, evaluation, and special events, as assigned by RecWell leadership. Serve on assigned departmental and University committees. Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in areas such as recreation, sport management, or related fields. Minimum of 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in aquatic management, staff supervision, programming, or instruction. Can consider direct graduate experience.
Skills: Ability to independently manage all aspects of comprehensive aquatics programming; establish vision and strategies that will contribute to the development of a quality and innovative program. Knowledge of risk management issues in aquatics and recreation. Must show ability to establish long and short term goals consistent with the mission of the university and the division. Must show ability to build, develop, and cultivate relationships across campus with a variety of constituents. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement programs. Successful candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, service-minded and adept at solving problems. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents. Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills. Proficient with computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.).
