Adventure WV employs six graduate assistants (GA) to work alongside professional staff toward AWV initiatives, including guided trips, gear rental, 5-6 day first-year trips, challenge course and team-building programs, canopy tours, international abroad trips, leadership development courses, and more. Adventure WV graduate assistants serve in a professional capacity, working with specific programmatic areas on a 12-month schedule to assist in administration, training, programming, staff management, and other logistical support. Projects and responsibilities vary seasonally and by position.
Position Availability: Starting in the 2021 season, Adventure WV has three Graduate Assistant positions available. See below for an overview of each position. Full position descriptions on each assistantship can be found at adventurewv.wvu.edu/jobs. 1. First-Year Trips Graduate Assistant: This GA works directly to support the success of First-Year Trips, including projects involved with staff recruitment, training, supervision and course direction, logistical support, program reservations, data compilation and analysis, and other logistical support. 2. Program Support Staff and Rental Operations Graduate Assistant: This GA works directly to support all logistical and rental operations for Adventure WV, including equipment, food, coordination of the department vehicle fleet, and assists in the management of student program support staff at the Outdoor Recreation Center. 3. Outdoor Education Center Graduate Assistant: This GA works directly to support the management and programming of all Adventure WV challenge course, team building, canopy tour, and overnight operations for Adventure WV’s off-site facility location.
Position Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree • Accepted and enrolled in a WVU graduate program (candidates may apply for GA positions pending acceptance at WVU) • Experience in outdoor and experiential education • Experience in outdoor trip leadership, group facilitation, risk management, and staff supervision • Excellent communication skills • Current CPR and a Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification- AWV may have the ability for GA candidates to obtain these certifications in-house upon acceptance, but preference will be given to candidates who already possess these certifications • Interest and experience in the specific program area of the position(s) applied for • For the OEC GA position specifically: Possess or be willing to obtain certifications in both challenge course and zip-line canopy tour op
