Under the general supervision of the Student Recreation Center Director, the incumbent will provide daily mentoring, engagement, and development to CSUB students. He/she serves as a member of the SRC Leadership Team and provides direction to this group in the areas of Facilities and Membership Services based on safe operating practices, NIRSA standards, and positive service methods.
Counsel student staff members on career-related skills, interpersonal communication, leadership and supervision skills, and other aspects of personal and professional development.
Work collaboratively with students, campus departments, and the SRC Advisory Committee in the development and implementation of fitness and sports programs, facilities and services, safety and security, assessment and outcomes, and outreach to campus.
Assist and participate in the recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, development, supervision, mentoring and recognition of 80+ SRC student staff.
Provide direct supervision to Student Managers and 25-30 student assistants.
Provide positive daily interaction with many of the 1000+ daily SRC student participants.
Leadership and Management
Work with the Leadership Team in providing comprehensive policies and procedures to ensure secure recreational facilities, appropriate event set-up and take-down and safety preparedness.
Ensure door alarm, CCTV(security system), key control, radio communications, and all other related software and hardware systems are efficient, effective, and maintained in optimal working condition.
Oversee asset management of all SRC equipment and capital items.
Work with the Leadership Team in providing comprehensive policies and procedures to ensure properly maintained equipment and facilities.
Provide direction and oversight to student and custodial staff regarding daily shift responsibilities and react to the needs of the facility to ensure cleanliness and a positive presentation.
Refer maintenance issues requiring specialized skills to Facilities Management or external vendors.
Develop and administer a schedule of routine maintenance for all equipment, building finishes and systems.
Coordinate with Campus Recreation staff and Facilities Management in planning and scheduling of recurring and special projects related to the facility.
Track all work orders, purchases, and maintenance to all custodial, event, fitness, and facility equipment and fixtures.
Ensure front line staff provides quality customer service at all times at the Recreation Center front desk.
Direct the planning, coordination, and assessment of comprehensive front-line services program and staff including facility access control, member services, and pro shop.
Conduct student staff training for Front Line Staff, to include customer service training, membership sales training, and overall knowledge on all SRC programs and activities
Ensure that members are appropriately informed of upcoming events, maintenance closures, facility improvements, etc.
Oversee all membership documents, waiver management, and ensure that membership registration procedures, equipment check-out, and towel/locker services are efficient.
Collect data on program sales, participation levels, and statistics on daily usage.
Respond directly to participant/customer concerns and challenges.
Collaborate with marketing staff to set goals for membership outreach and promotion.
Safety & Risk Management
Participate in risk management and provide leadership in the implementation of staff safety training and preparedness evaluation.
Conduct regular walk-through and review of facilities and develop facility check-lists for student staff.
Assist in ensuring that all staff members are current in appropriate certifications (safety, blood-borne pathogens, chemicals & cleaning supplies, etc.).
Review, document, and track all injury and incident reports.
Assist in establishing SRC priorities and develop an annual budget to reflect these priorities.
Monitor line-item budget for assigned program areas.
Monitor facility work orders to ensure work is completed, payments processed, and proper charges are documented.
Set fiscal goals for pro shop sales, membership sales, day pass sales, and sponsored guest sales.
Participate in SRC strategic planning, goal setting, student learning outcomes, and assessment.
Engage in professional development in order to maintain progressive and innovative systems/services as they relate to recreation programming and student development.
Prepare quarterly and annual reports for each program area.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in the development and implementation of program policies and procedures consistent with the CSU system and NIRSA guidelines.
Serve as liaison to various campus offices/departments as they relate to assigned program areas.
Represent the SRC on selected University and community committees, boards, and task forces.
Remain informed and current on all pertinent matters including all campus and CSU Auxiliary policies and procedures
Perform related duties as required and assigned.
Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Graduation from a four-year college or university, in recreation administration, physical education, sports management or other job-related major and one year of professional campus recreation work experience. Graduate assistantship positions may qualify for work experience.
Experience in recreation facility management.
Experience with recreation management software.
Previous supervision of student staff members with demonstrated skill in group leadership.
Previous experience developing, promoting, and managing successful student-directed, student-centered programs.
Previous experience providing superior customer service and/or managing a team that provides customers service in a high volume environment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong public speaking ability.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Knowledge of Windows-based computer systems and Microsoft applications.
Current American Red Cross certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid (or ability to obtain within first 30 days of employment).
A Master’s degree in a directly related field
Knowledge of NIRSA standards and OSHA requirements for collegiate recreation facilities.
An understanding of the basic principles of student development and campus recreation programming.
Experience with InnoSoft Fusion Recreation Management Software and 25Live.
Experience in the maintenance and troubleshooting of recreation and fitness equipment.
Experience in working with on and off-campus vendors in providing timely response to maintenance issues.
Experience in budgeting and fiscal management
Experience with building HVAC, lighting, flooring, electrical systems, etc.
Knowledge of proper cash handling methods and procedures.
Current NIRSA member.
Demonstrated skill in developing effective working relationships within recreation staff and with other campus constituents
American Red Cross Instructor certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid.
