The Student Development Specialist II is primarily responsible for supervising and developing a large student staff. Specific duties include: teaching certification and recertification classes, evaluating performance, and assisting in developing and accessing high impact practices. This position is crucial in assisting with overseeing the mechanical and chemical function of maintaining the pools, as well as assisting in the development and implementation of risk management protocols and the area budget. - Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, and assessing lifeguard staff
- Oversees and confirms lifeguard certifications
- Trains and manages student staff in operational procedures
- Helps develop and assess high impact practices
- Assists in training students in mechanical and chemical operations
- Assists in teaching lifeguard classes and re certification classes as needed
- Assists in overseeing the preparation of pools for daily and program use, including chemical balance, temperature, etc. This includes testing and monitoring testing of chemicals, inspecting filtration, pumps, and chemical feeding systems, and performing appropriate adjustments to those systems
- Responsible for overseeing facility cleanliness and sanitation of the aquatic facilities
- Assists in development and implementation of the aquatics budget
- Responsible for the lifeguard wage budget
- Purchases chemicals and supplies for facility operations
- Works with university purchasing procedures for capital projects as needed
- Assists in the development and implementation of risk management protocols and the area budget
- Helps develop and administer the risk management policies for all pool areas
- Assists in aquatic event management and facility preparation and rehabilitation for events
- Assists with aquatic programming including development and execution of new programs to reach marginalized groups across campus
- Serves on university, divisional, and departmental committees as needed
- Assists in establishing short and long-term goals concerning the Department of Recreational Sports
- Interacts with the Director and staff members regarding topics to help identify opportunities for improvement
- Maintains a positive relationship with other personnel and departments that assist in the development of the department and its programs
- Conducts tours and orientation sessions for incoming freshmen, transfer students, and conference groups
- Attends local, state, and national workshops and conferences
- Hosts and presents at various recreational sports workshops
- Interacts with student, faculty, and staff for the benefit of carrying out the mission of the department
- Perform other related duties as necessary and appropriate for the position as assigned by the Director or Supervisor

Required Education and Experience: - Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- One or more years of experience in student affairs work or related specialty with a bachelor's degree; No experience required with a master's degree
Required Licenses and Certifications: - Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications
- Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) must be obtained within 90 days of hire
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Ability to supervise and evaluate employees
- Ability to supervise, train, and coordinate event staff
- Ability to plan, establish, and implement set up and take down for swim meets
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
- Ability to keep accurate and up to date records
- Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and/or data entry applications

Preferred Education and Experience: - Bachelor's degree; Master's degree
- Minimum of two years supervisory experience, including at least one year lifeguard experience and at least one year swim meet management
- Experience in pool chemical handling, lifeguard training and scheduling, pool mechanical system, and Aquatic Event Management
Preferred Licenses and Certifications: - Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT), Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification, SCUBA certification, Certified Recreational Sports Specialist (NIRSA).
