The purpose of this position is to oversee the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) including: one fulltime professional position, and 40 part time student positions. This position is responsible for managing the rock-climbing walls, all student trip leader trainings, the off-campus trips, workshops and events, the year-round outdoor rental center and bike/ski shop. This position oversees five financial indexes with a budget of nearly $250,000, and also manages two university vehicles.
Responsibilities:
Organize, administer, and evaluate all aspects of the ORC including the management of special events and workshops; rock wall; rental center; bike and ski shop; day, overnight, extended and international trips. Plan and develop programs, policies, procedures and marketing plans for the ORC.
Manage a comprehensive budget, including the management of all expenditures and the generation of revenue for the ORC, as well as daily deposits, tax reporting and the point of sale (POS) system.
Supervise the hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, discipline and payroll for one full time exempt employee and approximately 40 ORC student staff.
Manage all risk management concerns for the program in conjunction with the Director of Recreational Sports. Reviews and inspects equipment, and vehicles related to the outdoor trips, events, programs, and rentals.
Teach two Physical Activity classes for credit each semester

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Outdoor Education and Recreation/Leadership or related field, 3-5 years of relevant experience. Experience working in university outdoor recreation program. Experience leading backcountry trips; climbing wall work experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Actively involved in the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education
Active member of the Climbing Wall Association
Experience with other institutions or universities (NOLS, Outward Bound, American Alpine Club, Wilderness Education Association, etc.)
Knowledge of permitting on public and private lands- Access experience with the NPS, NFS, BLM, state parks, country parks, city parks
Knowledge and skills managing multiple budgets and forecasting for a small business.
Knowledge and skill in facilitating small group trainings.
Skill in customer service in a number of areas: rental center, off-campus trips, indoor climbing walls, and bike/ski repair shop.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Developing program policies procedures, strategic plans and assessment tools.
Managing point of sale systems, online reservations, and online sales.
Experience in hiring, training, and evaluating staff.
Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance and repair of recreation equipment, especially skis, snowboards and bikes
Successful purchasing experience in analyzing products and services as well as developing RFPs
