Graduate Assistant of Aquatics and Safety (contact: Jenny Knejfl - fagan422@uab.edu)
The Graduate Assistant of Aquatics and Safety is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations and management of all aquatics programming and the Aquatics Center. This position will directly supervise the Aquatics Supervisors and Lifeguard staff, and assist with oversight of the Learn-to-Swim program and instructors. They will also assist in the department’s risk management and certifications program.
Responsibilities:
Provide oversight to the Aquatics Center, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment is maintained.
Conduct daily inspections of pool, deck, mechanical room and patio.
Assist in managing a comprehensive aquatics program to include group swim lessons, private swim lessons and aquatics certifications.
Serve as an active member of the Risk Management Committee, assisting with department certifications, mock emergency drills and skill audits.
Work with Assistant Director of Marketing and Membership on program area marketing needs and requests.
Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Aquatics area.
Evaluate and assess program performance and effectiveness.
Hire, train, schedule and evaluate Aquatic Supervisors and Lifeguards.
Hold monthly in-services and trainings for all aquatics staff.
Develop and maintain inventory of all Aquatics equipment.
Assist in regular written communication such as monthly and annual reports, financial reports, and equipment inventory reports.
Assist in policy development and enforcement for Campus Recreation Center.
Work with the Operations Coordinator on scheduling programs within the facility.
Work with the facilities team to stay updated on operational aspects of the pool and mechanical room.
Graduate Assistant of Operations (contact: Kaitlyn Freeman - kplan@uab.edu)
The Graduate Assistant of Operations is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations and management of the Campus Recreation Center and Operations staff. This position will directly supervise all facility attendants and assist in supervision of the facility supervisors. They will also assist in the department’s reservations and facility rental process.
Responsibilities:
Provide oversight to the Campus Recreation Center, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment is maintained.
Conduct daily walkthroughs with the Coordinator of Facility Operations to ensure facility cleanliness and operation.
Plan set-up and break-down for all department special events, facility rentals and reservations.
Provide staffing for all department special events, facility rentals and reservations; provide onsite supervision as needed.
Assist in processing facility reservations and with the communication to various groups who host events at University Recreation facilities.
Work with Assistant Director of Marketing and Membership on all facility signage needs.
Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Campus Recreation Center.
Hire, train, schedule and evaluate facility attendants.
Hold monthly trainings for all facility attendants.
Assist in regular written communication such as monthly and annual reports, financial reports, and equipment inventory reports.
Process facility reservation requests and communicate directly with students, members and non-members who submit requests.
Position Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree
Acceptance into a UAB Master's Degree program
At least 1-2 years of demonstrated experience in specific area
Appropriate certification (i.e. lifeguard, LGI, CPR/AED, personal training, fitness, etc.)
Leadership and supervisory abilities
Ability to work as part of a professional team that collaborates effectively with colleagues
Entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm
Analytical skills to: identify problems, assess alternatives, and render consistent, logical decisions
Ability to write concise, logical reports
Strong communication skills
Ability to work independently
Knowledge of standard practices in recreational sports and fitness

Some knowledge of HR theories and best practices in recruitment and staff development
Basic accounting knowledge; capability of understanding budgets
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
