NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Assistant Director, Fitness. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working as part of a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to create world-class wellness and recreation programs, services, and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Director of Wellness.
The candidate will provide dynamic leadership and manage an innovative and comprehensive collegiate fitness program that includes group fitness, F45 Training, small group training, Exercise is Medicine, personal training, fitness assessments, over 50,000-square-foot open recreation fitness space and fitness special events. The candidate will ensure all fitness programs and equipment operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of safety standards. This position will serve the university community by leading programs and services that promote a thriving Wolfpack community.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provide overall leadership and direction for the collegiate recreation fitness program that includes group fitness, F45 Training, small group training, Exercise is Medicine, 50,000-square-feet of fitness center spaces, personal training, fitness assessments and fitness special events.
Supervise two full-time staff members; indirectly supervise approximately 200 student staff. Ensure staff provides the highest level of customer service for students and members.
Oversee the administration of the group-based fitness and personal training programs by implementing goals, expectations and procedures for assigned programs, equipment and service management.
Develop, coordinate and execute fitness staff training opportunities for group fitness instructors, personal trainers, fitness assistants and program assistants with a focus on student development and learning.
Oversee the daily operation of more than 50,000-square-feet of fitness center spaces. Responsible for fitness equipment purchasing and fitness center management.
Create, supervise, implement and assess campus-wide fitness initiatives based on current trends, related to promoting healthy active lifestyles.
Serve as department liaison to campus partners that include but not limited to Student Health Services, Counseling Center, Prevention Services and University Housing to develop collaborative programs that support student success.
Responsible for the specific and direct fiscal management of the fitness program.
Lead the assessment and evaluation efforts for the fitness program each semester identifying participation levels, program participant interests, learning and development objectives. Develop recommendations and implement new classes, programs, and activities.
Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.
Additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health promotion, recreation or a related field.
At least two years of full-time experience leading fitness programming planning and implementation.
Ability to teach multiple group fitness class formats.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, TRAINING/EDUCATION
Four years of full-time experience leading fitness programming, planning and implementation.
Current American Red Cross CPR, AED and first aid.
Experience managing full-time staff.
REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredited group fitness instructor certification.
