The individual reports directly to the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports for Outdoor Pursuits and will be afforded leadership roles in the areas of student staff development, the climbing wall, outdoor gear rental shop, weekly activities, and re-starting the outdoor extended trip program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interview, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate over 35 undergraduate student staff including Climbing Wall, Outdoor Pursuits Rental Center, Outdoor Pursuits programming and extended Trip Leader staff.
Assist in the management of the 53 ft. Climbing Wall including programming, route setting, scheduling, and maintenance.
Assist the Assistant Director in the planning and implementation of multiple semester, extended trip experiences.
Responsible for outdoor risk assessment and group management in remote locations.
Responsible for some transportation of participants to trip locations.
Assist in the development and creation of regular outdoor skills clinics and demonstrations.
Responsible for the development and coordination of the Outdoor Pursuits rental center including gear purchasing, gear maintenance, cleaning, and rental procedures.
Coordinate one program assessment and participation report per semester.
Support high-profile special event programs. These programs will include fall/spring semester Welcome Week activities, NIRSA Day, Random Acts of Kindness Day (RAK), and other similar style events.
Provide professional staff leadership with supervisory responsibilities that may include mornings, evenings, weekends, and during various university academic breaks.
Participate in staff development opportunities sponsored by Texas Tech University and Recreational Sports.
Admission in good academic standing (not on probation) to the Graduate School in a graduate degree program.
Minimum one year of experience in the field of outdoor leadership, outdoor campus recreation, or outdoor community recreation.
Experience managing outdoor groups in remote environments.
Clean driving record and ability to pass University driving exam.
Hold, Wilderness First Aid Certification
Hold American Red Cross AED/CPR/1st Aid certification.
Within three months become an American Red Cross AED/CPR/1st Aid certified instructor and teach 3 classes/year
Experience supervising and leading staff in various climbing wall, outdoor gear rental shop, or outdoor trip program.
Involvement/certification in at least one outdoor professional organization (ACA, AMGA, LNT, etc.)
AMGA or PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor Certification
Knowledge and experience route setting at a commercial or collegiate climbing facility.
Experience managing equipment rental program in a university setting.
Hold, Wilderness First Responder.
Additional Salary Information: * Tuition remission for up to nine hours of graduate level tuition not to exceed $2,750/semester
* Monthly stipend of $1,200/month for nine months
* Professional development up to $400/year.
