The Assistant Director of Fitness Programs is responsible for administering comprehensive fitness programs and services that meet the demands of the university community and promote the mission of Recreation & Wellness. Primary duties include the design, implementation, coordination, training, and general supervision of the personal training program. Additional duties include assisting Senior Assistant Director of Fitness and Special Programs with researching, evaluating, and recommending cardiovascular and strength training equipment as well as designing appropriate equipment layouts and floor plans in conjunction with outside vendors. Additional duties for this position include personnel and fiscal management, policy and procedure development, inventory control, program development, and program promotion. This position will recruit, hire, train, develop, manage and evaluate part-time student employees. Conduct regular program and participant assessments to measure effectiveness and implement new initiatives based on industry trends. Develop and cultivate relationships with campus and non-campus constituents. This position will report to the Senior Assistant Director of Fitness & Special Programs. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Duties & Responsibilities
Program Management. Responsible for overseeing a personal training program with over 200 unique clients and 3,000 personal training sessions a year, serving a diverse range of in-person and virtual users. Manage tasks such as building clientele, personal trainer evaluations, client pairing, inventory database, upgrade and replacement for fitness assessment, and personal training suite. Develop and implement regular assessments of the program to measure learning outcomes, development opportunities, customer satisfaction, and participation statistics. Create appropriate personal training service options and packages, while working collaboratively with other fitness staff and leadership team to determine appropriate fee structures. Create a vision and promotional strategies to inform current members and recruit new customers. Oversee and grow group training and premium classes such as Olympic lifting, powerlifting, weightlifting, etc. Research and recommend new trends, services, and operations. Instruct a nationally accredited certified personal training certification course in order to recruit new potential student trainers.
Personnel Management. Supervise, manage, develop and evaluate a professional intern, leads/program assistants, and personal trainers. This includes, prioritizing duties and responsibilities; ensure staff members are well versed in the vision, mission, and policies of the department, Division of Student Life, and the university; providing regular guidance and development opportunities in specific job tasks and personal and professional development areas. Staff will be trained on providing fitness education and services to patrons, providing safe and inclusive options for all users, scheduling and managing proper payroll procedures, developing and implementing regular assessment of the staff and programs to measure learning, customer satisfaction, and participation statistics.
Equipment/Planning. This position will assist the Senior Assistant Director of Fitness & Special Programs in researching, evaluating, and recommending appropriate cardiovascular and strength training equipment and designing appropriate equipment layouts and floor plans. Serve as department contact for fitness equipment vendors. Work collaboratively with facilities staff to ensure that proper preventative maintenance and repairs are executed on fitness equipment. Collaborate with facility staff on area renovations and updates involving fitness equipment.
Financial Oversight. Maintain a budget in accordance with department practices. Reconcile expenditures and ensure prudent stewardship of resources. Calculate, project, propose and manage the budget for personal training (supplies, equipment, part-time staffing wages) and maintain appropriate inventory control procedures. Work with senior staff and business office to regularly assess appropriate fee structures.
Collaboration/Campus Programming. Work collaboratively with members of the fitness, special programs, wellness, outreach, and other campus partners to develop and program wellness initiatives and programs for the entire university community. Assist in implementing and directing special events, workshops, and conferences. Aid in the development of group fitness, personal training, small group, and fitness/special programs outreach.
Other Duties. Collaborate and assist with departmental planning, policy development, implementation, evaluation, and special events as assigned by RecWell leadership. Serve on assigned departmental and University committees. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in areas such as exercise science, sports management, kinesiology, health education, human performance, or related fields. If in degree is in process, must be completed within one year of hire. Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in fitness programming, preferably in a college setting. Can consider professional internship and/or graduate assistantship experience.
Nationally Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA) personal training certification. Additional certifications preferred, but not required.
Ability to independently manage all aspects of a comprehensive fitness program. Must display the ability to establish long and short-term goals consistent with the mission of the university and the division. Ability to design and manage programs to meet the needs of a large, multi-dimensional department. Must show drive to build, develop, and cultivate relationships across campus with a variety of constituents. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement employee training sessions and supervise a student workforce. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, service-minded, and adept at solving problems. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents. Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills. Proficient with computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.).
