The Assistant Director of Sport Programs works collaboratively with the Senior Assistant Director for Sport Programs to develop, oversee, and administer comprehensive and progressive sport programs that meet the demands of the university community while also promoting our mission. This will include primarily intramural sports, some club sports and some esports. Deliver recreation and wellness programs designed to promote teamwork, active lifestyles, and leadership skills. Plan, schedule and coordinate all program activities. Participate in the development and implementation of program policies and procedures while collaborating with the integrated communications team to market programs. Conduct regular assessments of programs to measure effectiveness, and implement new initiatives. Participate in budget allocation and program outreach efforts.
Duties & Responsibilities
Administration. Work with other Sport Program assistant director to oversee and manage all aspects of a comprehensive sports program, involving hundreds of teams and thousands of participants, including intramural and electronic sports (E-sports). Develop strategic goals and a vision that supports the departmental and university strategic plan and mission. Develop and implement appropriate program policies and procedures to ensure safe, inclusive, and educational programs and services. This includes daily administration of multiple sports, prepping facilities, equipment, scoresheets, supervising activities, game and result tabulation, and generating reports. Provide regular and appropriate assessments of the program to measure development opportunities, learning outcomes, customer satisfaction, and participation statistics.
Programs. Work with other Sport Program assistant director on all aspects of conducting leagues, tournaments, and special events. This includes working with member services staff to ensure registration procedures are in place, facilities to define and secure appropriate facility space, plus scheduling events and communicating with captains and participants. Collaborate with marketing and web site personnel to develop appropriate marketing and promotional strategies while meeting all Purdue requirements.
Personnel. Work with other Sport Program assistant director on staff oversight for dozens of student employees, with ongoing transition and turnover of staff between sports and seasons. This includes planning and coordinating training workshops, teaching customer service skills, emergency protocol, conflict resolution skills, sports rules, officiating mechanics, and game management skills. Includes training, supervision, scheduling, as well as knowledge of departmental policies. Provide personal development opportunities for staff.
Budgeting. Provide assistance and recommendations for operating and personnel budgets for sport programs. Reconcile expenditures and ensure budgets account for staff, equipment, facility usage and supplies for each sport and activity. Work with business office to ensure “best practice” university standards are met. Maintain appropriate inventory control procedures for all program specific inventory.
Club Sports. Provide oversight of designated club teams to ensure they provide safe and inclusive participation for all members. Assure adherence to campus protocols regarding practice, game, and travel opportunities.
Other Duties. Collaborate and assist with other divisional and departmental planning, policy development, implementation, evaluation, and special events, as assigned by RecWell leadership. Serve on assigned departmental and University committees. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in areas such as recreation, sport management, or related fields. If in degree is in process, must be completed within one year of hire. Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in sport rules design/implementation, programming, officiating experience (certifications preferred), training officials and staff supervision. Can consider direct professional internship and/or graduate assistantship experience.
Ability to offer leadership, vision, and strategic planning that will contribute to programming a diverse offering of intramural activities that meet the changing needs of the university community, including the potential for E-sports. Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and develop a wide variety of student staff positions, such as sports officials and event supervisors. Ability to develop students' leadership, communication, conflict resolution, organizational, and teamwork skills. Must show ability to establish long and short term goals consistent with the mission of the university and the division. Must show ability to build, develop, and cultivate relationships across campus with a variety of constituents. Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and develop student staff. Successful candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, service-minded and adept at solving problems. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents. Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills. Proficient with computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.).
