This position will develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of fitness and wellness programming to improve the health and well-being of the Old Dominion University community. This position is responsible for maintaining current certifications and continuing education related to the recreation field. Other duties include: assist the Assistant Director in hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, evaluating graduate assistants, and student and part-time staff.
Job Tasks & Duties:
Assists in the supervision and maintenance of daily aspects of the fitness & wellness department to include Personal Training, Certification Prep-Courses, Instructional-based classes, workshops, and special events. Coordinate the administration and organization of a fitness program in support of university students, faculty, staff and alumni. Manage and schedule personal training sessions, POWER, and Military Wellness sessions. Develop fitness offerings to increase revenue.
Hire, train, and manage graduate assistants, student staff, and hourly staff. Responsible for managing time and payroll for respective staff. Promote student leadership opportunities that support departmental student learning outcomes. Facilitate staff development that encourages training, managing and mentoring of peers.
Conduct regular program assessments to determine satisfaction levels, areas of improvement and measure learning outcomes of student staff. Participate in overall departmental assessment planning and goal setting.
Assist with the development and execution of marketing strategies for fitness and wellness programs, services and special events. As well as development and administration of the fitness & wellness budget. Perform related duties as assigned.
Maintain relationships through collaboration with the ODU campus community and external stakeholders by providing direct service through the research, design, and teaching of programs based on campus fitness and wellness needs.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in exercise science, recreation, or sports management or a bachelor’s degree in areas previously indicated along with experience equivalent to an advanced degree or related field; undergraduate and/or graduate experience may be substituted for equivalent experience. First Aid, CPR and AED certifications required. Possession of or ability to acquire a valid Virginia State driver’s license. Minimum of one (1) nationally recognized fitness certification such as: AFAA, ACSM, NASM, ACE, NSCA, or CSCS. Some experience in the development and implementation of programs in a variety of fitness and wellness areas, including but not limited to: exercise prescription and program design; nutrition education; stress and time management; weight management. Excellent organizational, management, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other individuals and departments on camps and in the surrounding community. Ability to maintain confidentially and work with a diverse population including: students, faculty, staff, and community. High-level of organizational skills and proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner. Proven ability to manage projects and deliver results. Excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to think critically and present information is essential. Excellent computer skills. Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel with experienced in desktop publishing and willing to learn new programs.
Preferred Qualifications: Work experience within a collegiate setting. Knowledge of student development theory. Some experience with staff management, student employee management. Experience with revenue projection and personal training session tracking.
