The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.
The Student Union, Inc. of San Jose State University supports the development, growth, and well-being of students and the campus community by providing diverse programs, desired services, and quality facilities to enhance the collegiate experience.
Under the general supervision of the Competitive Sports and Outdoor Adventures Sr. Manager, the Fitness & Wellness Supervisor is responsible for supervising 30-40 student and part-time employees providing oversight and support to the day-to-day operations of the fitness and wellness programs.
Instill the value of customer service standards with students and part-time staff through training and consistent management. Works closely with SUI Student Success and Assessment team to ensure for growth and proper training of student staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and coordinate a comprehensive fitness program including group exercise classes, personal training, strength and conditioning, fitness assessment, small and large group training, instructional programs, and workshops.
Hires, trains and supervises student assistants and part-time staff working as fitness instructors and personal trainers.
Develop and implement wellness workshops with an Integrated Wellness Model incorporating the SJSU campus community.
Collaborate with the university community and specialists on various health and wellness programs around the dimensions of wellness.
Create models for group exercise and personal training to train and eventually certify these areas.
Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance to industry standards and safety procedures.
Conduct evaluations and assessments of all fitness/wellness programs.
Provide direction and oversight of fitness and wellness programs in accordance with the mission and goals of the department, Student Union, Inc., and Student Affairs.
Monitor studio and fitness floor equipment, communicating repairs and maintenance needs to appropriate staff. Purchase equipment as necessary.
In absence of scheduled instructor, may be required to teach a class, (if certified in format)
Run semester staff meetings, special events, and all promotions for fitness and wellness programs.
Manage all staff certifications, ensuring they are valid and current.
Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with the following: Wellness Center, Department of Kinesiology, Student Life and Leadership, Associated Students and other departments as appropriate.
Develops, maintains and is fiscally responsible for the fitness and wellness program budget and revenue generation programs.
Partner with SUI Marketing department to support the promotion of Spartan Recreation fitness and wellness programs through marketing and outreach to the campus and surrounding community through direct messaging, membership drives, newsletters, and campus events.
Partner with all SUI and the Wellness Center to facilitate an inclusive environment that inspires innovation and effective student development.
Partner with SUI Student Success and Assessment team to ensures learning outcomes are developed and assessed annually for the student staff.
Assist Spartan Recreation and Student Union, Inc. team members in supporting all special event programs and services.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

Compliance for Law, Policies and Codes, and Issues Related to Safety and Risk - Adheres to compliance laws, policies and codes related to not- for-profit corporations, facility safety and concerns, as well as state and CSU mandates. Implements procedures to identify and correct potentially hazardous or unsafe working conditions. Mitigates risk where appropriate through knowledge of policies and procedures.
Requires a BA/BS degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sport Management or other related field. Master’s degree preferred.
2 years’ experience in a group fitness and/or personal training setting.
Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification; American Red Cross preferred.
Capable of teaching at least one format; willingness to become certified in at least one specialized program (Les Mills, Beach Body, etc.)
National fitness certification required (ACE, NASM, ACSM etc.)
National wellness certification preferred (NWI – CWP, AFPA- Health & Wellness Coach Certification, etc.) or able to obtain within first 3 months of hire.
Requires strong computer skills including the use of excel, power point, etc.
Requires good oral and written communication skills.
Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Experience with Fusion recreation management software.
Experience with the administration of recreational activities and programs.
Demonstrated ability to advise and provide guidance to student leaders.
Ability to coordinate, organize and prioritize projects with attention to detail.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with student leaders, faculty/staff, community members and campus group users within a very diverse community.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to supervise students and delegate responsibilities.
Available to work flexible work hours, including occasional weekend, evenings and holiday’s.
Ability to lift 45 pounds safely and stand for an extended period of time.
