The Director of Campus Recreation provides the vision, leadership, and oversight of the Department of Campus Recreation, which includes aquatics, fitness, intramurals, outdoor adventure, and sport clubs as well as the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports and associated fields, and supervises staff members responsible for facilities and programs within the department. The Director recognizes the critical role of campus recreation in enhancing student wellbeing and the quality of the student experience at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and prioritizes student learning and engagement in decision-making and program development. The Director manages and supports the budgeting, operations, and marketing for the department.
Provide vision, leadership, and oversight for the facilities and programs of the Department of Campus Recreation, which includes aquatics, fitness, intramurals, outdoor adventure, and sport clubs as well as the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports and associated fields. Supervise staff members responsible for facilities and programs within the department.
Develop and monitor the department's annual budget and associated accounts in a fiscally sound manner, continually assessing opportunities for increased revenue in order to cover costs and support new initiatives.
Oversee the operations, maintenance, and management of the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports and associated fields, evaluating facility needs and determining solutions in order to enhance the quality of the student experience.
Evaluate, propose, implement, and oversee appropriate policies and procedures for the programs and facilities that comprise the Department of Campus Recreation, working in collaboration with students, patrons, staff, senior leaders within the Division of Student Affairs, and Legal Counsel, as needed.
Serve on University and Division committees as requested, including the Dean of Students Leadership Team
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in recreation or related field (sports administration, higher education) is required.
A minimum of five years’ experience working with a campus recreation program, including facility operations, budgeting, and program assessment, within a college or university setting is required.
Experience with managing and overseeing capital projects is preferred.
Membership in NIRSA (professional association for leaders in collegiate recreation) is preferred.
Three years of supervisory/management experience is required.
Must have strong knowledge of business and management principles involved in resource allocation and coordination of people and resources.
Must have understanding of safety and risk management practices related to recreational and competitive sports, as well as indoor and outdoor facilities.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

Must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
Must possess strong leadership and supervisory skills. Must be able to develop teamwork and collaboration.
Candidate must have excellent critical thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to resolve multiple complex issues and situations in a timely manner. Must possess the ability to handle crises.
Must have well developed organizational skills that include effective planning, time management, and the ability to handle multiple tasks/projects.
Must be accurate and detail oriented, including financial responsibility, budgetary knowledge and monitoring of expenditures against budget.
This position requires some evening and weekend work, particularly related to facility operations, programs, and potential crises that may arise after hours.
The position requires minimal travel; primarily for professional development opportunities or to build relationships within the community.
