The Professional Internship (PI) at Purdue RecWell is a 2-year program designed to provide a pathway for emerging leaders with a bachelor’s degree in hand, to advance their education and careers in collegiate recreation. The Professional Intern works 29 hours per week, earning $25,000 per year, is eligible for health and retirement benefits, and takes graduate courses in pursuit of their Master’s Degree online and tuition-free through Purdue University Global. This position will have a variety of opportunities within Recreation & Wellness for professional development including, but not limited to participation in department-wide standing committees and projects, professional development opportunities and more.
The Professional Intern for Sport Programs reports to the Assistant Director of Sport Programs and is responsible for assisting in all aspects of intramural sports, club sports, esports and summer kid’s camp. Under the direction of the Assistant Director, assist in staff development, program planning, promotion and implementation as well as program assessment. Typical duties include staff recruitment and training, sport development, league/tournament management, rules design and testing, team oversight and advising, activity and event management, and student development. Conduct regular assessments of programs to measure effectiveness, and implement new initiatives. Assist in budget allocation and program outreach efforts. Responsible for remaining enrolled at Purdue through the completion of degree program.
Work collaboratively with fellow staff to market, promote, and administer programmatic sport activities.
Assist in the oversight of designated officiated, non-officiated, tournament sports, and special events.
Research, review, and edit sport rules, policies, and procedures and recommend changes consistent with national standards (with the opportunity for growth and development in implementing both traditional and non-traditional sports).
Develop, edit, maintain, and document quizzes for captains, supervisors, and referees through Qualtrics program.
Assist in the administration and oversight offering input on program goals and initiatives.
Serve as the Primary Contact to designated Club Sports and their officers, offering assistance in the day-to-day management of the clubs including travel, event, financial, and personnel management.
Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, management, supervision, and evaluation of the Intramural Head Supervisors and Supervisors, Club Sport Program Assistants and Field Supervisors, Officials and Summer Kids Camp Counselors.
Assist with the development, conduction, and facilitation of Sport Program trainings and meetings.
Assist with the preparation, planning, organizing, enhancing, and execution of official’s trainings.
Assist with the retrieval, review, and editing of video material for referee development.
Assist in the training and development of Club Sport Officers.
Mentor and develop Club Presidents and Officers of assigned clubs.
Provide assistance with on-site supervision of games and serve as a customer service representative for patron assistance.
Collaborate with fellow staff to prepare, organize, coordinate, and execute semester registration periods, playoff brackets, intramural championship night events, management and support of sport club events, including mentoring officers in event planning.
Utilize IM Leagues – Participant and program management software used for scheduling, registration, rescheduling, roster management, score entry, participation tracking, and messaging.
Utilize Timeforge – Staff availability and scheduling software.
Operate iPads – Participant check-in, score entry, shift reports, misconduct reports, and other relevant reports and forms.
Manage club compliance and officer improvement plans.
Assist in the development and implementation of risk management policies and practices utilizing Connect2Concepts.
Video Technology – Utilize captured video footage to clip and edit in video software.
Accountable for daily office operations and must adhere to scheduled office hours.
Mentor student employees and contribute to the assessment process through continuous feedback.
Assist with official’s development program, which includes Head Officials, posting video plays on our video website, video breakdowns, and participation in extramural tournaments.
Assist in conflict mediation and recommend student disciplinary action and sanctions when necessary.
Pursue continuous professional development opportunities.
Prepare and maintain annual assessment document of participation statistics, game results, and accomplishments.
Maintain and report program data including Club member statistics and accomplishments.
Complete program assessment and evaluation with the Sport Program Staff through data collection and documentation from surveys and feedback.
Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sport management, or related fields.
Minimum of 6mths of related experience.
Must be able to remain enrolled in Purdue Master’s program through completion of degree.
